Do You Remember "The Winter Of Discontent?" How Did You Entertain Yourselves?

I don't want to turn this into a political discussion. No, all I want to know is this:- Do you remember the Winter of Discontent as it was known at the time 1978-1979? Were you a child or an adult? Did it bring you all together as a family because the telly was off and we were plunged into darkness with only candles for light? Did you play board games (as we did)? Was there anyone in your family that received better wages as a result of the "action?" My Mum did; her wages quadrupled overnight..as a dinner-lady. She's still there now aged 64 but as a cook. She loves her job but it's harder work now than it was when she started in 1974. Don't let people tell you that the public sector is easy because it ain't. I loved that woman on Question Time last night in Birmingham when she said that most public sector employees at Birmingham City Council are earning less than £17k a year. It's like this everywhere, north of Watford. Could the country cope now if it were plunged into such depths? I think not. Anyone outside the UK will probably not realise what I'm on about but here is some background information just in case you're curious lol. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winter_of_Discontent

That's funny because I was there in early spring 1979. I don't ever remember hearing the expression before (except for Richard III). But I do vaguely remember my friends and I who were traveling there had some concerns about some kind of strike or something...

Yes, the strikes definitely happened and it looks like France is in the thick of it this time round!

Thanks for the info. I will read up on that. I am from the US and was trying to remember back that far, ... the I realized your from the UK ... No wonder I couldn't remember anything, lol. I thought I was losing my memory there for a moment. Sounds like tough times though, I will go read up on that right now. :)

It was silly of me not saying all this was happening in the UK..sorry about that! At least our profiles give people an idea where we're all from lol. I hope you find the link interesting anyway.

I have never heard of this before. I was only 5 turning 6 at the time and on the other side of the world, so even if I had heard about it at the time on the news, it would not have meant anything to me! I learn something new every day from you Jane!
