Advantages & Disadvantages of Cruises?

I love to travel, but have never been on a cruise. The prices seem REALLY low, but say they are inclusive. I don't have a lot of money for traveling now and they seem like a decent option. So I'd like to know about cruises from people who have taken them. Let me know any advantages or disadvantages. Also, about how much money out of pocket do you think someone needs while on a cruise? It seems like the most expensive part is getting to the departure port (I don't live near any of the coasts). So discuss anything you love or hate about cruises.

I really love to travel and I am an independent traveler rather than a tourist. I have been on planes, trains and buses. I have been on ferries but I haven't ever been on a cruise ship. When I was traveling in New Zealand I was at a port close to Christchurch. I saw a huge cruise ship. I asked about it and found out that the rich tourists were going to travel around the South Pacific Ocean on it. I imagine that a ticket on that would have been ever so expensive. On that trip I had flown from London to New Zealand for just £800 and I had been able to do lots of stopovers. I had stopped off at California twice, French Polynesia, the Cook Islands and Samoa. I think that cruise ships can be at sea for days so that would be boring quite possibly for some tourists. When the cruise ship goes somewhere the tourists will be likely to have just one day there. They are going to have to pay for a coach trip of the city and might not have enough time to independently explore. I prefer to stay in a city for three to seven nights because I like to see as much as possible. One day in a city wouldn't be enough for me. I think that the cabins are for two people and single people have to pay lots of money for a single cabin. An indoor cabin doesn't have a window. An outside cabin with a window is very expensive. I think that the entertainment on the cruise ship wouldn't appeal to all the different people on the trip. When I travel I can fly to any airport I choose and then travel around a region spending exactly as long as I decide to in any place I go to. When I was in Cape Town I chatted to some cruise ship passengers that were sailing around the world. I expect that trip might have cost around £100,000. When I was 20 to 21 years old I went around the world by air and that was a cheap trip. I stayed in youth hostels and traveled in economy class. I think Caribbean island hopping by cruise ship might be worth doing. I would prefer a 30 day airline ticket to go around the different islands. I think that about $50 to $200 a day would be pocket money on a cruise.

The cruises I was looking into are Carribean ones for 4 days, with two stops and the starting prices were around $269 (for an interior room, including food & some entertainment options). You make valid points about the constraints of cruises versus traveling on ones own. I have only ever traveled in tourist groups as a teen, and I don't know if I have the confidence to travel on my own, especially to countries that English is not the native language.

I think that a 4 day cruise for $269 in an inside cabin is a great price. When I was 19 years old I traveled to St Lucia and it a lovely island to go to. I would very much like to see more Caribbean islands especially Tobago and Grenada. I have traveled to some countries where not much if any English is spoken. In Bulgaria I had some difficulty communicating.

I have no idea how much pocket money you would need on a cruise. Depends on how long the cruise is. I would probably bring anywhere near $100 and $200 just for food and entertainment. I have always wanted to go on a cruise but my family never really had enough money so hopefully I will be able to go on one when I am older.

I hope you get a chance to go on a cruise once you are older, too. I have never been, but I enjoy traveling so much that it seems like a nice option.

I have taken a cruise and I enjoyed it very much. I was concerned with going on the cruise as being expensive. I sat down and figured the cost of transportation, meals, and motel room and the Cruise is very cheep even when you figure in the docking fees. Before you book the cruise ask about the port or docking fees. As with any tourist attraction you can spend as much or as little as you want. On the cruise I was on there were many shows and activities you could participate in at no cost. The meals were excellent and you always had a choice. One other expense you should figure in is the tipping for the staff. Enjoy your Cruise.

although i've never been on a cruise, i'm not that interested in going on one. just about everything one can do on a cruise they can also do while not being on a cruise from what all i've heard. it would however be nice to try it at least once.

Hi, I have been to star cruise twice while I was in Singapore. it was pretty fun trip and I am looking forward to it again. I would say the price is not that cheap, but thinking of those nice view and food served on board, it was worthy. I been to Star LEO and Star Virgo, both of them departed from Singapore. I don't see any disadvantages for cruise trip...as long as I can enjoy and have fun,it is worthy to spent that money.
