Alien Life on Newly Discovered Planet?

Just read in the news that SETI astronomer Dr. Ragbir Bhathal claims to have observed a strange, laser-like light emission that allegedly came from the same vicinity as the newly discovered planet Gliese 581g. While this claim is being met with some skepticism, his claim was first published about two years ago so it is not like he is trying to just jump on a alien bandwagon. The new planet is within the habitable zone around its star and has the capability of liquid water existing on the surface if it does indeed have H2O. Have you heard about this planet? How about the new claim of possible alien transmissions?

I hadn't heard about this, but how exciting if it is true, and a real indicator of life on other planets! When pulsars were first discovered, astronomers thought they must be alien signals because the intervals between pulses were so precise and perfect, but it turned out that's because the pulsars were rotating that quickly, and it was just a physical phenomenon unrelated to life. I hope this is different! Please keep us updated if you hear anything else!

I had heard of the discovery of the planets around Gliese 581, but I had not heard about the associated laser-like signal that was reportedly detected. Thanks for the heads up! I'll have to do some research about this - I've been intensely interested in the planet hunting scene for some time. But as with the WOW signal many years ago, apparently they have not detected another such transmission, and we definitely need for more people to be able to verify these things in order to view them as genuinely valid and important.

There are a total of 6 known planets orbiting around Gliese, but only one has the potential for liquid water on the surface because the others are either too far away or to close to the star. Gliese 581 is the only one the right distance for water to exist in its liquid form. It is unknown if it has an atmosphere or not, but with the fact that scientists are finding water literally everywhere that they look these days, there is a good possibility that it is in fact Earth-like. If there are indeed aliens living there is, of course speculation. But this scientist's findings are very interesting and will no doubt be the talk of the internet for a while!

Indeed! I think exciting times are just ahead. But Gliese 581 is a star in the constellation of Libra, and Gliese 581 g is the planet in question. The g designates a particular planet around that star, as do the letter designations a, b, c, etc.

Yes, I had heard about Gliese 581g. This is just fantastic and amazing news. They say that the planet also has gravity and that we would be able to get around upright. The part about life on the planet i had not heard...that's a bit scary. I also found it strange that it's so close and yet it's not been discovered before this.

Well, the scientist didn't actually say that there was life on the planet for sure (thought he did elude to it) but says he detected a signature of light that has long been sought out because it is the same type of light "event" that SETI has been looking to detect for years. It is very strange that it came from the same location as Gliese 581g so he is obviously trying to get us to look closer at the possibility of life being there. Cool either way!

I never heard about this planet, but I did read somewhere that there are some stars that have planets that are in the life inhabitable category. I do believe there is life on other worlds, but do not know if the life originated there on those planets or whether people were brought to those planets by denomic or angelic beings or whether there had been a natural worm hole from Earth to those that was later destroyed. I am going by the theory that angels and demons thousands of years ago were able to change themselves to different forms.

That does sound exciting. I always imagined taking vacations on another planet. I mean there is so much to do here, but it would be wonderful to go among the stars. I know that some people say we came from the stars, but I do not believe it and maybe for some people from other planets talking about the Flood, and maybe mentioning famous characters of long ago and yet not having been here recently, could prove that God made life first on Earth.

This actually the very first extrasolar planet ever discovered that has the potential for liquid water to exist on its surface. While there are probably a trillion such planets out there, this is the first one discovered so far! Keep a look out though as more are sure to be found soon.

hi ralon I would not go quite that far yet as they are s aying it might be b ut they still need more real proof. I read about it two years ago but have not heard anything to really prove that the light emission was s actually made by alien life at all. when I see real proof with pictures then I will begin to believe this.Notice the word possible not is , just possible . there must be more real proof than that.

Hi Rallon! Yeah I heard it, the new planet is called Goldilocks if I'm not mistaken. They say that it's similar to earth and now there could be a possibility of a life form there, wow... I think that will be amazing.

The planet is in the Goldilocks zone, which is to say it is in a region orbiting its star where the temperature is thought to be "just right" to support life. In our solar system Earth and Mars are in such a zone.

I would be hard to be the only one make a discovery like this. Usually when astronomers see things they ask others to confirm the observation. In this case it looks like the 'signal' has been a one time occurance, at least so far. I think we've now broadcast a lot signals in the direction of the planet and we may get an answer 40 years from now snce the planet is 20 light years away.
