Are all technical classes like this?

I have been working on an electronic publishing associates degree for the last year since my BA has failed to help me find a job. In the classes for the electronic publishing degree it seems to be nothing but computer classes where we just work through the book. After this semester I will be 3 credit hours short of my degree and feel I have learned nothing since it has been purely work through the book, follow the directions, don't think for yourself. Are all technical courses like this or is the school I am presently attending a poor school?
