She's done it again - but what is 'Hello Kitty'?

As promised here is the picture of the latest cake that my daughter has made. I don't know about you but I think that these are getting better! This is a 'Hello Kitty' cake and is for a 7 year old girl's birthday. I think that this is a really pretty, girlie cake but don't know if I'd be able to cut it!! My only problem is that I have no idea who or what 'Hello Kitty' is, I think I must be getting behind the times with children's trends! Can anyone put me right as to who or what it is - is it a TV programme, book series - I have no idea??
