Why is hip hop/rap music so popular? Are hip hop and rap the same kind of music?

I know hip hop or rap music has been around for a long time but it seems that lately it has gained a lot of momentum. Almost every knew singer you hear is doing hip hop or rap, does any one know why. And is hip hop the same as rap, I get very confused in this subject too? Thanks for your responses in advance.

I think it is popular because it is good music, not all, but some. But I was hoping someone had an answer about the difference because I always used them interchangeably, thinking they were the same thing..

I guess there is a difference and I prefer Rap..Though I do like hip/hop as well..

Rap and Hip Hop are different. Rap is just poetry to a beat while hip hop is more about making you feel energized. And i think they are popular is because it's newer than the classic's like Rock, Metal, or even Country.
By the way, I listen to Hard Rock, Heavy Metal.
