Women and abusive relationship

Is there a possibility that a woman returns to abusive relationship once she had left it. Though she has all independence after freeing from the old abusive relations, are there chances that she returns to abusive relations again.

In other words, women feel the violent men need them so their altruism makes them stay to help.
