Our big yellow lab, Buccaneer, has a thyroid problem that can be managed with medication. I have been hearing advertisements for online vets for years, but I don't know whether or not they are to be trusted. Any dog owners use such services? Any advice?

Ask yourself whether you would allow an online doctor who's never seen you to diagnose your problems and prescribe medication for you. If not, why not? Does it make sense for you to trust a perfect stranger, who may not even be what they claim to be, to know what your problesm are? If not, then the same applies to your pet.

I like your reasoning, though I have seen doctors that I did not know and followed their treatment prescriptions. And what of those places online that have been in existence for years?

Of course, the first time you see a doctor, you're strangers. But he gets to know you and he can examine you physically and can refer back to your records when you return. So the point is not how long a doctor has been online, but whether he's capable of treating you without ever seeing you.
