Why are there no good movies these days?

I seriously think that the quality of movies has gone downhill a lot in the past few years. I rarely find movies I want to see, which is a shame, because I used to see a lot of movies in the past. Does anyone else have this feeling? Most movies these days seem to be very predictable or all about vampires, which I honestly do not like so much. How do you guys find more original movies to see? Is seeing foreign films the only way to go?

Sorry, but it doesn't have to do with the movies coming out, it has more to do with your age, and how many movies you've seen. A great piece of proof for this is IMDb, the best movie website, where each movie is given a rating by the masses of people, and you can see these ratings by the cross sections of age and gender. So, as an example, I'll use the new big movie, "The Social Network". Males under 18 gave it 9/10 on average, then people 18-29 gave it on average 8.7/10, then 30-44 gave it 8/10, and 45+ gave it 7.7/10. If you look at almost any movie out there, even moreso the big hits, you'll see this pattern. There are still great movies for everyone coming out these days, it's just that as we get older, they don't seem as good. In my opinion, some of the best movies came from 1999, but, that was my graduating year from high school, where I first started to really get into movies, so it only makes sense that those were my favorites.

I agree, but I think it's mainstream movies you're looking at. If you look around some more, you might find something that's great. I look to indie films for really good quality story telling.

Yeah, you are right, that could be a good solution. How come I didn't think of that? Thanks for the idea!

A few years? It seems like there haven't been a good movie season in a decade. There were few good movies here and there but not like the early 90's or the 80's.It seems like only so called romantic comedies ,which are not funny or romantic, horror films, which I don't see. and action films, that I do like are all that is being made. And then there are the " for the whole family" films I don't see. I am not a family! And the blockbusters based on graphic novels or super heroes. i don't see them either. So I don't go to the movies. I stay home and see old movies on cable.

For me, I think, nothing changes from the past up to the present. It just that all of "us" are getting old, so that's why we thought the quality of movies has already gone. Like the experience of my mother. She told me when I was a teenage that the quality movies has already gone. During my teens, most movies are actions and too much violence. The only thing that I would say is: "What?! I don't understand you! Don't compare the movies from the past to our modern days." Now, this year, I have a friend which is the same of my age told me that the quality of the movies has already gone, so I've realized that from the past movies up to present is still the same. Nothing changes. It just that the trend movie is always changing and it only depends on the age of each individual in our society on how we view it about movies in our modern days.

Correct me if I'm wrong and I would apologize if I judge you (which I try not to do). Seems like you're not a teenager who is crazy with the current Twilight trend. Going downhill or not would be a matter of taste, but I don't necessarily disagree with you. Put it in a different way. Movies that are now produced in the US seem to get around C average by critics. Browse Yahoo movies and you can see how critics tend to rate movies nowadays. Good movies like some comments here, are hard to find. I don't know if you have seen 'Inception'. That is considered a current great movie, maybe not great in who knows 10 years or 20 years or more. You mention foreign movies. Unfortunately as you might notice, foreign movies are not promoted so much in the States, while movies produced in US/Hollywood are box office everywhere around the globe. As you might have figure, either lots of people don't like watching movies with subtitles or they don't care about other languages...

That is what I usually do too, but sometimes my friends and family recommend the weirdest things to be honest. So I have learned whose advice to listen to and who's not, hehe!

yes I'm starting to feel the same. I think because every one is relying on good special effects they don't mind about the story line as long as it has a good visual effects. Like the latest movie i watched that didn't even touch my expectations and its really a big disappointment for me. the 4th installment of the movie resident evil. they didn't even mind to have a good story line as long as the fighting scene is pretty on 3d thats okay for them.

No? Movies nowadays are okay to great if I must rate them. I just don't get it why some people don't appreciate these movies, especially indie movies. Oh wait, I think you just saw Eclipse, you've been pointing it all out on this vampire thing which is a shame for a movie lover like you. Foreign movies, hmm, there are a hell lot of good foreign movies lined up this year, even last year, I do not know why you say there's been no good movies these past few years, maybe you are only watching local movies then hell it's really not good. If you're gonna ask me, I stopped supporting local movies, why?, cuz the effects sux badly, well of course except for the dramas, but I do not like dramas, it's too much for a guy like me.

I'm with you on this. Nowadays movies really suck. Producers seem to rush through productions now and don't ever give the movies any real plot. What I think has happened is we have made everything possible that was unique at one time and now we are just running out of new movie ideas. This would explain why all the new movies this year where either re-makes or 3-D. I always wonder what is going to happen when people finally get tired of watching movies.

As far as I can see, movies nowadays are not that bad though there are quite a number of movies that even if you give me a free ticket, I wouldn't want to watch it. One real good movie this year that I watched again and again on repeat was Inception. Really a very original idea that amazed me. Recently I also watched Wall Street and The Social Network and I think both the movies were good as well though not as good as Inception. Do watch The Social Network if you haven't watched it yet.

Movies that are made from books just gives you the auditory and visual entertainment. But novels and stories from books are much better because they stimulate your imagination. In my opinion, books are better than movies.
