not me... my niece... she's pregnant and has been looking for a job and she says she can't find one because no one wants to be responsible if something happened because she's pregnant. Do you think telling your potential employer (I'm assuming it'd be a retail job) you're pregnant before getting hired is a requirement? I mean, not hiring because you're pregnant is discrimination, isn't it? And, if she withheld the info that she's 1/2 way done with her pregnancy, they can't just turn around and can her, can they? I actually found out I was pregnant with my 1st child right after I started a new job. And, I was halfway done with my pregnancy when I completed my internship for college and he kept me until I had the baby... So, I never had to deal with this situation. What do you guys think?

I could be mistaken, but I think that the it is illegal to discriminate against hiring people because they are pregnant. I do know for sure that it is illegal to fire a pregnant person because it looks like discrimination. That said, I think that it shouldn't be that difficult at this point in time, it shouldn't be terribly difficult to find a retail job during this part of the year because of the fact that most retailers are hiring for at least the holiday season. I wish her the best of luck.

I hope that your niece will be able to find a job. Often a pregnant lady has a maternity leave then comes back to work part time. Some of the ladies choose to be a stay at home mom once they have their baby. I am sorry to say that these days when there is a job advert they will get many applicants. I know that the school had more than 60 applicants for a special needs learning support assistant job. Therefore they interviewed just 5 of these people. Only one lucky lady got the job to work alongside a special needs child. If a lady is in early pregnancy they would not know she is pregnant. When she is 20 weeks pregnancy she might have a bump and it would be noticeable that she is pregnant. Some employers would be fine about a giving a pregnant lady a job others would not choose to do that. It might be quite challenging for your niece to get a job after she is 29 weeks pregnant. Good luck to her in her job seek.

Hi, I do believe it is bit difficult to get a job for pregnant woman. Some employer just don't feel comfortable to employ a pregnant woman as their staff because he knows that the pregnant woman is going to deliver in few months time and she will be on long break after delivery. The company may consider to get those woman who are not pregnant to work for them. However, from my point of view, it is better to tell the truth about her pregnancy during the interview or else, when the employer find out later and sack her, then she will get hurt lastly. But not all employer refuse to employ the pregnant woman. If your niece has a good qualification and experiences, some companies might consider to employ her too. It is also a matter of luck and one thing your niece has to bear in mind, never give up!

With how tough the job market is these days if I wasn't showing I wouldn't say anything. Pregnancy is treated like any other illness, nice huh, depending on how long she was employed before the baby is born she might fall under FMLA but if not she would not get time off. They could fire her for not coming to work. It depends too on the state that you live in. I live in a state where really they can fire you for no reason at all, can't remember what it is called. It is a tricky situation. If she is showing there is no way to hide it and that may be a reason they won't hire her as they know she will be taking time off soon. They would never say it. Also as a new employee if she is offered medical the cost will be higher than someone who is not pregnant. To me being pregnant would make it harder to find a job especially when there are so many people looking right now.
