Do you think Michael Clarke is the right choice for Aussie captaincy?

It has been some time since Clarke has taken over as the T20 captain for Australia and is now the captain of the ODI team in the absence of Ponting. Also he is in line to take over from Ponting once he quits. Do you think he is the right person to lead Australia? Past evidence points that captain has to be an intense character such as the likes of Lloyd, Border, Waugh, Ponting and Ganguly. If anything Dhoni looks slightly out of place by being a bit cool and yet successful. But, Clarke looks to be a happy go lucky chap and to me currently not yet there to be the Aussie Captain!! What is your say on this? Do you think the "Pup" is now ready to be the "Dog" for the Aussie cricket team? Cheers! Ram

I definitely think, Clarke is not the right choice to lead the mighty team. But they don't have other options..All of the senior players have left the team and Ponting might go after the World cup which leaves them no choice to chose Clarke. No senior players are available for them to give the responsibility of leading the team. Dhoni has no place in this captaincy records..How much did he score in the test series against Aussie ? Even if we take the previous series, he had done nothing.

As of now Aussies is in very bad condition if they want improve with bowling as well as batting means they have to call back such a players who can play like Glichrist, Hayden and who can do bowling like Lee, Mc.Grath. It is very difficult for the Aussies to win the WC if they take the same team to the world cup.

Yes, after a long time, I think this will be a more equal world cup with the likes of India, South Africa, England and Aussies with similar strength!! So the captaincy and strategies might just decide the winning factor!! Cheers! Ram

surely not. He is very unlucky with his Captaincy. The series he captained the team(the series which I knoe) ,all were end at a failure

So you think he is not fit to be a captain because he is unlucky? Something like our Sachin? Cheers! Ram

no not at all. he has no captaincy skill. in past he had lost many matches after australia scoring 300+ in first batting(in a series vs newzeland). he is worst as a captain but good batsman.

Hmm, then who do you think is the right replacement for him. Callum Ferguson's name has come up in the recent times as a viable option. Cheers! Ram

Till Ponting is playing, I don't think Michael Clarke will be leading Australia. I think they should have given chance to Michael Hussey who is a senior player in the side. They should have considered him before Clarke. But Aussie are looking at the future, so they have gone for Clarke. Among the current young players they don't have any choice other than Clarke. Clarke had lead well in T20 World Cup, they managed to reach Finals. Clarke may prove to be the right choice for captaincy. But how good he is in ODI's and Test as a captain that will be there to see once he gets his opportunity, maybe after Ponting retires. I think Ponting still has atleast 2yrs of international cricket left.

I think Ponting will retire from ODIs after this world cup, so that is not far. In Test matches he might continue for another year or so, but not sure if he will continue to lead them if they lose the Ashes. The problem with Hussey is that he is also at the end of career which I think is a max of another 1 or 2 years. That is the reason why the board has gone for Clarke. Cheers! Ram

Yes, he is young and that is also a part of my question. Is this too big a burden for him? Cheers! Ram

I think Michael Clarke is a very young player and he has ability of leading their Aussies teams. But for this he need some times and some good series. Because in present their bad time continues and they lost the series in India. So I think it is not good to judge them only by one or two series. We can’t forget that Aussies are number one team in one day rankings and also they has won 4 times world cup.

But he has been the number two for quite some time now. I think that he has had fair amount of chances to showcase his leadership capabilities. Cheers! Ram

The problem with Aussies is in their golden period they had many good players who were capable of being very good captains but never got the chance because there were better players than them for the job, for eg Warne could have been a great captain but Steve Waugh was better so he got chance after Mark taylor, something similar happened with Gilchirst because Ponting got the chance after Steve waugh, but now when their dream run or say golden age is over they are finding it difficult to find successor of Ponting.By end of golden age i dosent mean end of Australian cricket or something like that as Australia is still a top team but end of their domination in world cricket for sure.As we know both Ponting and Steve waugh were among the top players in world cricket before they became captain, but is Clark among the top players in world like Border , Waugh or Ponting to play like a leader to set an example? also the team which Steve waugh or Ponting got had lots of match winners like Mcgrath Warne Hayden Gilchirst Symonds and many more now Aussies dont have such players ,presently they dont have such players and also when he takes captaincy he wont have Ponting and Hussey also probably so will Clarke be able to take the challenge and maintain the winning standards previous Aussies captains has set ? i think only time will tell the answers of these questions but for now Clarke doesnt look ready to be a captain.

Actually if you look at the likes of Taylor and Border, they were confronted by a similar team and went on to build a world beating side which benefited Waugh and Ponting. So I think Aussies are back to that stage now. BTW, the golden period is going to get worse over the next year of so with Ponting and Hussey also shortly retiring!! Cheers! Ram

Hi!! This is the most intriguing Question about The Captaincy of Australian Cricket. Don't forget that They are playing against India in India. The History of Cricket has shown us numerous times that most of the deadliest teams, players have failed miserably playing in India. This is too early to criticize Michael Clarke for his captaincy. He has the burden of bringing best out of a very young Australian team. The team lacks the attacking power that used to thrill world cricket in the past. The likes of Mcgrath, Gilespie, Kaprowitchz, Shane Warne, Brett Lee have left the legacy without mentoring the new Fast bowlers and Spinners. Even the battling line-up lacks the versatility of killing machines like Mathew Hyden and Ricky ponting, not to mention the wicket keeper batsmen Adam Gilchrist. Even then if they were able to post such a competitive score and put up a strong fight against India in the first One day International, then you have to actually praise Clarke for his captaincy and efforts.

I do agree with your assessment that winning in India against India has been a pain for many a great captains and we should not judge Clarke based on that alone. But there seems to be an air of casualness about him that was not associated with the past Aussie captains. Also if you see his dismissals in the two test matches, they were more casual than something the opposition had to work at getting. That to me is the disconcerting aspect. Cheers! Ram
