Can you sign onto facebook invisibly?

I don't go on facebook very much, but when I do I usually am very busy and just want to quickly check it and get right back off. The problem is when I sign on, people see that I am on and then they want to chat. Some are people I have not seen or talked to in years so that chats can be very long. Even if they are not long, they are intrusive and distracting when I am busy and it's not always easy to tell someone (or several someones)that you have to leave. Is there some way you can set your preferences to where people cannot see you when you log on?

If you go to your chatbox at the bottom right corner, set it to offline & everytime you logon, it will come up offline until you change it. I always have my chatbox to offline as everyone wants to talk to me when I want to go to bed.

im really hoping you get an answer to this. im taking a look at your responses to see because the same happens to me even tho i spend very little time on there. now, ive spent many hours on myspace and i have taken off the alert there. but it was so long ago i cant remember how.
