Child marriage is a practice in which the parents of two small children (even infants) arrange a future marriage. The children are betrothed or promised to each other. Often the two children never even meet each other until the wedding ceremony, when they are both of an acceptable marriageable age -- which age differs based upon custom. In some cultures, the age is at or even before the onset of puberty. The rationale behind this practice is that a child's parents can arrange a sensible match with the parents of a child from a suitable family, thus securing the child's future at a young age. Many people who have been married in this way do grow to love and cherish their spouses after the marriage. It is thought by adherents that physical attraction is not a suitable foundation upon which to build a marriage and a family. This consideration would have - been more relevant in the context of the puritanical and orthodox environment of the bygone ages. The practice could also have been perpetuated, especially among- the economically weaker sections, by the consideration of keeping marriage expenses to a minimum. A child-marriage need not have been as grand an affair as adult marriages. Source: http://www.vivaaha.org/child.htm Child marriage was a common feature in India before Indian Independence in 1947. After Independence Child Marriages have been made illegal. The legal age to marry in India is set at 18 for women and 21 for men. The law is followed in most parts of India but in some regions of the country parents arrange child marriages for their children. Children as young as 10 years old are married off in the states of Rajasthan. In an effort to curb the practice of Child marriages the states of Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Himachal Pradesh in India have passed laws that mandate the registration of all marriages in order to make it a valid marriage. Source: http://www.answers.com/topic/child-marriage-india Child marriage is not good at all because both the partners are not fully physically and mentally developed to understand the responsibility of marriage. It also tends to increase infant mortality rate. The mother of the child has more risk at the time of delivering a child thus increasing women mortality rate also.
