I am from India. While watching Television few minutes back, I got surprised to learn that in India the fish Vendors are using formalin to keep the looks of fish fresh in the shop. According to them the keeping quality of fish becomes quite good after giving a shot of formalin to a dead fish. This helps them to store these fish in the ice for one month easily, which other wise would have become stale or rotten within two to three days. But the chemical formalin which i basically used to preservation of dead bodies, is a irritating agent which is carcinogenic in nature. this can cause cancer, Thus the fish treated with this chemical is nothing but a source of getting cancer! Thus means eating fish in India does it mean that we are embracing cancer that too by paying money? Government should look into this aspect seriously to save the innocent people from this man made business which can lead to a massacre! Your comment on this topic is highly appreciated! Thanks

I think even if the fish is very well done it is hard to remove the formalin injected into the muscles of the fish which is a carcinogen. It is really a big problem and only intervention of government authorities and awareness amongst the people can solve this problem. Otherwise there can be very dangerous repercussions because of this ! Thanks for responding!

It was found happen in Malaysia too. It not just fish. Some even use it for meat too. but what can we say? How we can differentiate the fish and meat which have been injected with formalin? Sometimes we just leave it to fate. The only thing goverment can do it to stop selling formalin. Make the only place where formalin is allowed is at corpse house.

Hi Oh thats very serious thing. I am from Goa and we just cant do without fish. But luckiliy, our local fisherman, whom we know very well, delivers fresh fish to us. Just yesterday we ate delicious Kingfish curry which was cooked by my mom. here's the recipe if you like: Ingredients: 1 kg Kingfish cut into 1" thick slices 4 tbsps cooking oil 1 tbsp mustard seeds 2 tbsps cumin seeds 8 dry red chillies 10-12 curry leaves 1 large onion ground to a paste 1 tbsp ginger paste 1 tbsp garlic paste 2 large tomatoes cut into cubes 1 tsp turmeric powder 1 tsp hot spice mix (garam masala) powder 5 tbsp grated coconut 1 tbsp tamarind pulp soaked in 1/2 cup of hot water 2 cups hot water Salt to taste Chopped coriander to garnish Method of Preparation: 1. Heat a heavy-bottomed pan on a medium flame and roast the dry red chillies, mustard and cumin seeds till they begin to release their aroma. Cool and grind to a fine powder. 2. Grind the tomatoes, turmeric, garam masala powder, coconut and above powder into a smooth paste. Keep aside. Squeeze the soaked tamarind pulp well in the water. 3. Heat the oil in a wide heavy-bottomed pan and add curry leaves and the onion paste and fry till light brown. 4. Add the ginger and garlic pastes and fry for 3-4 minutes. Add the tomato and spice paste and fry till the oil begins to separate from the masala. 5. Add 2 cups of hot water and the tamarind pulp to this masala and stir to mix well. 6. Bring the gravy to a boil and then simmer. 7. Gently add the fish to this gravy and cook till done. 8. Garnish with chopped coriander and serve with hot steaming rice.
