Hi there. Thanks for dropping by with this discussion. If you happen to go on this page, perhaps it catches your attention about interests you have... fish and fishing.... OK... as not to get the story longer, I just want to ask for your fishing advice. My family will go fishing this coming weekend together with some friends. It is about 20 minutes drive from our place. It is the first time I will try to go fishing using a fishing rod. They say that it really depends how well you can handle the fishing rod... Whatever that means... It seems that fishing is a good hobby to spend quality time with the family... Do you think it is? Or it will just past our time and go boring? How do we make this fishing enjoyable? We will be fishing in a rented fishing village... And you know what? Anything we catch from the fishing village can be brought to the adjacent restaurant for cooking and we can have a good dining of our catch fish. But the thing is, I don't have fishing experiences or fishing knowledge. I don't know what bait will I have for what fish... I think it is good that you can share here some of the fishing advices for newbies and those who are interested to go fishing... And of course we will be going with friends, it will be good that I can say something about fishing when we talk about it. You know, it will be difficult for me to share discussion with them if I do not know any basic thing about fishing... So you could help me by sharing some of your advice... Thanks in advance!

Hi melcaden: My coastal hometown has lots of creeks flowing to the sea. Needless to say I spent my childhood roaming these waterways catching fish. Our fishing rods are made of half-inch thin bamboo with a number 16 nylon line and a number 120 hook attached to it. For bait, we just dig around for earthworms to catch catfish, mudfish, eels and other freshwater fishes. Just attach the live earthworm to the hook, cast it to the water and wait. Sometimes we use old mosquito nets attached to bamboo frames and decorate them with roasted coconuts for baits to catch mostly shrimps. We do shrimps at night for we found out eventually they're active after dark. Fishing at sea requires another technique. We have to deal with the tide and the waves. We also have to ride a boat. When fishing by the shore, we use the bamboo pole but when out to sea, we just drop the line by the boatside. We also learned salt fishes require for the bait to be mobile or they won't touch it at all. Those are the basic ways for fishing. More advanced techniques include elaborate lures, using poles with reels and motorized vessels. There's also spearfishing if you know how to swim underwater. For me, that's the ultimate thrill in fishing, especially if done at night. Nowadays, due to rapid industrialization and illegal fishing activities in our town, the fishes has somewhat diminished in number and its harder to catch them. I long for the days when we just have to sit by the banks and haul in the catch by the minute. Happy fishing. Nothing compares to the thrill of feeling the line in your hand tremble as the fish takes the bait and you haul in the catch.

Hello rog0322, Thanks for an informative short advice. So..that's how it will go for fishing. I got a little more excited now and already looking positively for the weekends activity. So earthworms are the best and economical bait that can lure the fish eh... good. Now I understand why they say "you need to dig before you fish"...=) Nice to hear your short story about your old fishing days...It sounds like you made already so many catch. Yet its sad to hear that your fishing area is slowly and slowly vanishing before your eyes...together with your fishing activities as well. Thats urbanization that we all face in modernizing world, some of our childhood hangouts then are being converted to an industrial zone now. Have a nice day... Hope I got a fine catch...

Hi melcaden, I wish I could go on that fishing trip. Anyways, I'm way too busy here and I can't find the time to fish in the meantime. What I'm catching nowadays are the big commercial fishing boats who intrude into our area to fish. Those are big fishes alright. Maybe in the near future, I may be able to feel the line go live in my hands again. I am happy you have noted our problem with urbanization and industrialization. Perhaps, we have some work to do in order to preserve our natural fishing grounds. Once they're gone, it may be very hard to get them back again. Tell us about your happy fishing someday.
