We drive a Kia Sportage 2002. We used to drive Cadillacs but when we bought a black labrador, we knew it wouldnt work out. So I found this Kia at a good price and in good shape also.
Hubby used to work outside the home and he was taking the SUV to work. Now he's been retired since April and he takes it out only once a week. For the past few months we've been having problems with it. Its turning but it wont start. We have a good mechanic and he has to put the SUV on the computer to find the problem, but everytime we get it to the garage, the SUV does just fine. They're tried everything to find the problem but they havent as of yet. We're lucky as we dont get charged for all the time its been at the garage since they couldnt find the problem.
Ive noticed that if you start the SUV, drive somewhere, go shopping, then it will take only 2 times before it starts. I have this feeling it might be some type of "seal" that might dry up and wont let the gas go to the carburator. I could be wrong as Im not familiar with new mechanic.
Would any of you men....or women if you know about mechanics....know what the darn problem might be? You're all welcome to help me find the problem so we can get it fixed once and for all....because its SO annoying!! Hubby had a stroke 4 yrs ago and what if something happens again. I need the SUV to start right then and there, not 5 or 10 mins after cranking it!
Please help??

First of all, it is not a problem with the carburetor because you don't have one. It is a fuel-injected engine. I do not know why the shop you use cannot find the problem, but you need to take it to somebody else. If it turns over, your battery is good, your alternator is keeping it charged, and your starter sounds okay. It could be a fuel flow problem, and any decent mechanic should be able to track it down. Maybe just need to clean the injectors.

Clean the injectors!! Well we tried the Dealership and they didnt know what the problem was. They said they couldnt find anything wrong and they charged us $68 for doing nothing :(
I'll tell hubby about the injectors. I too feel it has to do with the fuel not getting where it has to go. Im used to older model with carburators......I think it was easier then !!
Thanks!!

It could be a number of things but a seal would still leak if you got it to a garage. I think it could either be a fuse somewhere shorting out or some other electrical problem. If I was you I would have stuck to a Cadillac because those KIA are garbage in my opinion. It could be also as simple as a lose or worn wire around the battery terminal or something. I drive a Chrylser Concorde 2001 fully loaded and when my brake light on the dash kept coming on I could figure out why until I crawled all around the car and found a wire that had rusted off its connection. Still cant find where it goes though?
Anyways try checking the electrical because if the problem is on and off again it sounds like a worn wire to me.

Oh believe me, I had some problems with my Cadillacs also.
I'll tell hubby to have a look at some of the wires. But wouldnt they have found it when they put it on the computer?
Its not rusted as we have it sprayed every year.
Thanks!!
