Never call them "Physically Handicapped"...!

Physically Challenged - People should not be called as "Physically Handicapped" since it create more negative impact on them

I just like to share and discuss this point with you which is happening in India. In Indian buses, earlier 3 to 4 years before, there is a separate seating for "Physically Handicapped" and the same words were written above the seats. But recently, since this word seems to give more "negative impact" and "inferiority complex" for handicapped persons, the government changed the word to "Alternate capability persons". This gives more positive feeling to real handicapped persons. I just translated the word in English which is actually written in Tamil which is my local language. What about your experience in this? What nomenclature they write for the seats separately allocated for such persons?

We call them simply "having disability" which at a vague way may mean "having control" So despite that disabled sound derogatory, it could also mean otherwise like keeping under control. Because if the sign says "for the enabled" it is for people who are reckless.

I think here in my country in the philippines, I have not heard any argument about the term physically handicapped. I think its a good term to indicate those people having impairments physically other than using disabled persons. We do have some special treatments to those who are physically handicapped people like seats in the public vehicle for them, priority lanes for them at the store, and a lane in the streets to those who are using wheelchairs.
