The ultimate irony in writing.

I have found something rather amusing. The fact is when someone tends to make a comment about a mistake that someone else has made in spelling or grammar, no matter how large or small, their own comment does more often then not have an error in it themselves. I don't know about you, but I always have found that amusing.

What I find funny is people who obviously think they are smart and writing "better" than the average person, but then get it wrong. Example: On the internet, a comment like "you and me should go see that movie" is grammatically incorrect, but because so many people make that error when speaking and writing, almost no one bothers to point it out anymore. "You and me" is correct in certain instances (as in "he yelled at my brother and me" or "he yelled at me and my brother") where "you and I" is incorrect, however, and it amuses me when people will say "he yelled at my brother and I" in an effort to sound smarter than everyone else. The same mistake happens with "who" and "whom", which is even funnier because "whom" sounds kind of pretentious even when used properly.

You bring up a good point. There are times where we here certain things in life and we try and sound smarter. It is best for some people just to keep their mouths shut because they can and will be proven to be foolish. Thank you for your response. It is much appreciated and it contributed to the topic well. Have a nice day and thanks.

I've noticed that too, and I do find it funny. I'm pretty forgiving about grammar at least on the internet, I just dislike chat speak - I don't even use it in text messages anymore. I can read it and I know people often prefer to use it when they are surfing on phones but I much prefer properly worded pieces. However, it really grinds my gears when people use chat speak in work emails. The amount of times when I get an email with words shortened ridiculously when they have a keyboard in front of them with all the letters on seems is just insane. Some of these people make three times what I earn, you think they'd be able to type Thanks instead of Thanx - it's only one letter shorter!

Depending on the day, Chatspeak does frustrate me. Most of the time, I just really brush it off. It is what it is. Of course if it going to be professional then I would prefer you type it out properly as well. Thank you for your response. It is much appreciated and it contributed to the topic well. Have a nice day and thanks.

I myself don't have the perfect English. Thus, I don't spend time correcting other people's work, particularly on grammar and spelling. I only comment on the content or message that this person is trying to convey.

As long as the content is clear enough that you can read it, then its all good. Most people tend to look too much into that fact however. Thank you for your response. It is much appreciated and it contributed to the topic well. Have a nice day and thanks.

That happens pretty often. Not just here on Mylot. Serious grammar errors bother me, but I never comment on them, or on spelling errors. Personally, I like to get everything right, but sometimes I forget to proofread before I post a comment on a forum. If you can't accept that not everyone has the same level of writing skill you have, then you shouldn't even be on a forum. On one like this, particularly, where so many people aren't native English speakers, criticizing grammar and spelling is especially rude. And it won't accomplish anything. The forums can be a useful way for non-native speakers to improve their English, but unless they ask for help, it isn't our business to criticize or to teach.

There is a proper time and place indeed. Its not here. As long as we can read enough to understand, than everything is good. Thank you for your response. It is much appreciated and it contributed to the topic well. Have a nice day and thanks.
