National Census in China

Canada
November 2, 2010 1:58pm CST
I couldnt believe my ears when they talked about this on the News. They have hired 6 MILLION civil servants to do the Census in China. Yikes, SIX MILLION people??? It blows my mind!!! I live in the Province of Quebec, Canada (not the city of Quebec but the Province) and we're 7,546,131 Million people here!!! Its hard to believe how many people live in China.....as far as Im concerned, its beyond comprehension!!!! We're 34 Million people in the whole of Canada. In terms of size of country, USSR comes first, then Canada, then China. We're the second biggest country in the world and we have all this land to run around in as theres so few of us lol. Am I the only one being overwhelmed by this information. Can you imagine SIX MILLION census takers roaming your country or state or province? What are your thoughts on this?

Hi, MagicalBubbles! Most of the 6 million are volunteers who are temporarily hired by the government to finish this task. It's rather difficult to count more than 1.3 billion peoples. Two volunteers went to my dormitory at night the day before yesterday. Actually the method was very primitive. Volunteers went to every house and counted how many persons are living in it.

Hi Qianyun6 ! Oh so they only count how many people there are?? Our census has a lot of pages to fill and they ask all sorts of silly questions. I guess it would never end if they were to do that over there! Thanks for explaining.....glad you were counted in then!!

They want to know everything about us so they can control us better or as they say her, to be up to date with "statistics" haha!! And yes its all very costly. Thanks!!

Hi, MagicalBubbles! Also a lot of silly questions here, e.g.: Where are you from? Where were you five years ago? Do you have a job, if not, are you seeking one? Such things like that... In my opinion, calculating the population is the only relatively significative side of this costly program.

Well, they are the largest when it comes to the population. But that number is still very surprising. And to think they already implemented population control in the past...

So true, they did!! I forgot about that. I wonder if they still do or if this all something from the past. Well if they can take care of their kids, why not!! I dont think government should be in people's bedrooms. Yes they are the largest population thats for sure! Thank you!!

They wont have much choice anymore if they still do as apparently, the birth rate of boys is going down all over the world. Soon we'll be girls only!!!! Not sure if that'll be a good thing haha!!

We were told that they still control the population and they abort the baby if it is a girl (the same with S. Korea) because raising and marrying off a girl would be more expensive than raising a boy. I can't remember if they are still practicing this though...I hope they no longer practice this.

We have our census here in the UK next year, then we'll find out just how big the "+" is in 60 + million people on our small island!

WOAH....that is a lot of people on such a small island!!! I sure hope all goes well for you guys. I think we have ours this year also. They send it by mail and we had a controversy as we used to have a long version and a short version. Some say that the long version is infringing on our privacy so it was taken out and now we'll all have the short version. I hate those to begin with. Thanks for replying!!

I've collected the census a couple of times now. The first time was in a country town and I had my area allocation and it was quite easy. The last time though was in a remote bush area and I had to travel over many properties and through many gates only to discover a dilapidated house with no occupants. Things are tough in the bush. I needed a guide who knew the district to help me and open gates. I actually had a great time but I did do a LOT of driving over a vast area. I only counted about 200 homes. When I thought about people in the cities doing apartment blocks, my mind boggled. China would be about 100 times worse with people living in extreme poverty and imagine too those people living in junks and sampans. It's just too hard to take it all in.

Oh my!! Must have been rather complicated for you to try and find people living in the bush. Glad you could find someone to guide you through it all. Yes it does boggle the mind to think of those millions living in the cities there. I dont know how long it'll take them to do it all. Thanks!!

Oh Im sure we have some illegal aliens living here also. We have to registered when we have a census here or risk going to jail. I didnt once and yet nothing happened. SO you're right, but we're NEVER as many people here as in China, thats for sure lol. Thanks!!

Not surprised much ... the population of China itself is too much ... they need so many volunteers......

Yes I know there are many people in China. The population here in Canada is so small that its not easy to try and imagine what it would be like. Thanks!

That is really insane, but I think people who do not live in China just can't imagine how big the population there is. So I guess in a way it makes sense, but it sounds like an incredible amount, you are completely right!

Yeah, I think it is possible to hire this much people, because china is one of the most populated country in the world and as you think six million wandering around for collecting data, would not be seems like this, they ll not be seen even as there are more other people in the country I think six million is enough to take such data...:)

Oh I know they wont be seen or even missed as there are so many in China. I was trying to imagine what it would be like as we're not that many here in Canada. Nothing to compare it with!! Thanks!!
