has anyone tried to learn from the book what life was like?

Hi! I've reread Little Women and this time I find myself asking a new question. How can I learn about 19th Century American life from it? I always wondered why the book refers to "poverty" when they had a servant (that I better understand). I now look at the book and realize that it was written before compulsory education and public schools. What else can we discover about everyday life from descriptions on the text?
