Are they legit? How do you make money from them? And what is a "lens"?

I've heard so much about Squidoo and how one can earn money from making lenses at Squidoo. But I think the main use for Squidoo is to build a landing page for your affiliate products because you can insert different modules like an Amazon module where you can sell stuff from Amazon.
