APA is the report form of writing. Headings and subheadings may be used. In professional writing, this is the best form for doctors, medical transcriptionists, office related reports, etc. I would not recommend using APA form for a Comp. class or story writing.

The APA I've heard of is American Psychological Association, and yes it has style/formatting guidelines for reports as well as styles for citing papers, books, etc. Different disciplines (medicine, news, etc.) have their own styles and style guides. For news, you'll hear of the AP (Associated Press) style guide; in medicine it's the AMA style guide. The best-known one used in publishing is the Chicago Manual of Style. There may be online versions of some of these guides.
