First of all, being a supervisor means that you already possess the skills to handle a team big enough of that strength. Leading a team is easy if you try to be friendly with the team as well as show some character to them. Make them work competitively and earn their respect and show them that whatever they are working for is for their own interest and that so they won't get bored and would their own enthusiasm into the work and this would help you in bringing the best out of them!!

i am afraid to be too friendly with them as they may think that everything would be okay for me. i guess i have to balance being friendly and being strict so as not to compromise the quality of work.

I think you have to be strict but at the same time you have to be friendly and you have to deal with your team very politely.Handling the team is not so difficult if you follow the basics, read some books for it. download the ebook "art of dealing with people" by les giblin.
