Positive vs. Negative re-enforcement?

Which do you think is a better motivation to lose weight - when you have positive or negative re-enforcement? All of my past diet buddies have all said different things. For example, are you more motivated to try to lose weight when you noticed you have already lost a pound, or when you're saddened by the fact that you've gained a pound?
The setbacks almost always discourage me, and I actually gain encouragement from watching myself succeed.
What about you?

i think it depends on the persons personality whether one helps or the other.. some like to lose to spite people that said they couldnt where as some need a cheerleader

I think I would like the negative re-enforcement. I think that's one of the reason I like watching the Biggest Loser. I think the show is just one big negative re-enforcement. It tells the contestant that they will literally die without realizing their life if they don't start exercising and losing weights.

I haven't try to lose weight yet because for me my weight still okay at around 70kg. But for me the motivation of losing weight because we are overweight is much better rather when we see the result. Sometimes when there is a good result, we become complacent and think we have done enough to lose weight. And before we know it, we start to gain weight again.
Like the saying goes, to lose weight is easy but to maintain a healthy weight is the hardest.
