At what age should you give your daughter her first diamond jewelry?

Okay, I was just watching The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills and one of the wives was throwing an over-the-top birthday party for her four year old daughter (even though I think the adults had more fun than the kids). Her gift to her daughter was a $1,000 diamond designer necklace. In my mind, I'm thinking that this four year old is probably going to lose this necklace within two years. Or she doesn't understand the value of the necklace. I don't know. I just know my mom didn't buy me my first real jewelry (non-plastic) until I was ten. Is the mother trying to overcompensate, live her fantasy birthday party and gift through her daughter? Or would you have done the same thing for your daughter if you could?

Wow, I have four daughters aged between 22 and 39 and I have never bought any of them diamonds, there is no way that I could afford it!! As four year olds they got play jewellery and only got bought more expensive jewellery in their late teens.

Hello! I didn't gave any jewelries to my only daughter, its her grandma, the mother of my husband who happened to be a jeweler gave her those jewelries she's having right now when she was a month old. Its a hoop white gold earrings, yellow gold hoop earrings, one stud diamond earrings, an ID bracelet, a yellow gold name necklace and a yellow gold ring. Until now, she had all this pieces. I let her wore just the earrings in school but I remind her the value of those pieces of gems. Im glad however that she never get lost anything she have, I just let her wore the white gold type of earrings for its not that loud to the eyes of many and oftentimes mistakened as silver unlike gold which is very attractive to those who wanted to get those. I will gave a diamond jewelry to her when she turned 18 I guess. Have a nice day!

I applaud you for teaching your daughter the value of the jewelry because it seems like a lot of kids really don't understand how valuable gems and fine jewelry are. You have a nice day as well.

I agree, four is much too young. Other than earrings, I don't recall getting anything other than sterling silver until I was in my teens.

Yeah, earrings I can understand, but it seems almost like a trend now to give little children these expensive gifts that they don't care about. For instance, my cousin's ex-boyfriend gave their one year old baby girl gold bangles. They are cute and everything, but the little girl has more fun throwing them around than wearing them.

Children can wear silver and gold jewelry. But I think that they only can wear diamond jewelry when they're 18 years old. Diamond is expensive and it's suitable for adult person.

Maybe the mother just wanted to get praises and let the other mothers around to envy her for doing such. It's a stupid thing to do. She can buy her a $1,000 doll if she would spend to make her daughter happy. Spending that much is out of the question since she's got the money to buy just anything for her child. The point there is, what is spending that much for? I actually received my first jewelry, a ring with my birthstone when I was 6. I got fascinated to it and I kept on pulling it in and out of my finger. I lost it in 3 days!

Now that you've brought that up, I wonder if that's the case. Maybe she's one of these women who "compete" with their friends about who gives their children the most extravagant gifts. Wow. LOL. Yeah, I wish I had money to burn like that.

My parents bought me my first diamond jewelry was when I was a newborn. They bought me diamond studs for my ears. After-wards, I got gold bangles and a gold necklace. But those were not $1,000, under $300. But my most expensive is my necklace I got two years ago from my mom :)I think around 16-18 would be a good age to get a expensive diamond jewelry.
