i heard this sharing from my professor who is a strong believer of Catholicism. Years ago there was a huge natural disaster that happened in one province in the Philippines. My professor was one of the people sent there for seminars and maybe researches? maybe... she said in the said village there were about 7 religions being practiced and there's what they call "Wives for rent." something like when the family ran out of money they would allow other men to take their wives for one night stand or something and give them money in return. my professor said that God allowed the extreme disaster to happen because of these wrong practices. what is your view?

Yes. I do agree that natural disaster linked to life and religion. Everything is written on the bible. This is what I believe. May God bless us.

Disaster is everywhere in the world. Not only disaster, but also war, famine, drought, crimes, conflicts and the likes has increased in the last couple of years an so. I do believe that something "divine" always intervened with us as humans. And it is always the defined answer. Unless somebody do not believe in "divine intervention", then he has different explanation and will give different rational explanation. And for me, I do respect that since it is impossible for them to accept that we live in a "divine" guidance world. Something to think about...Why AIDS has come up in the recent generation? What do you think? I think it is a cursed of too much pleasure by some humans. It is a virus brought upon to humans so that everyone will be reminded that enough is enough... These are my thoughts about this... We are entitled to our opinion I guess.

thanks for the response and i respect your opinion. i must admit i am in the stage where i really wanna seek further and the real answers to all my questions. i think i am being an existentialist here, but it feels frustrating how science, logic and some stuff oppose religion and beliefs.

I feel it's linked because all these bad practices can lead to bad karma, which is true. I can understand how the family feel when they have no money. However, allowing other men to 'erhem' their wives is simply a bad thing to do. I mean, do they even consider their wives' feelings at all? That's why I think God punished these people. This is karma and a vicious cycle.

I do not know where he got his information but the Catholic Church does not teach this at all. Bad things happen to good people but how do we really know what is bad or good? Case in point Nobel Peace Prize winner shortly after winning learns his wife has cancer. Now he thinks he is on track with the cure for cancer and will shortly! What is good and what is bad! Not even the Catholic Church knows.

hmm... i don't think so... i'm a Christian, but I believe in a God that is good and wouldn't persecute the innocent. bad deeds will be taken into account on the judgment day, so there must be no need for such punishments. is that wives for rent thing a socially accepted custom for those people? if so, then it is not correct to judge the practice according to another system of belief's standards. what is immoral for Christians may not be so for them. there's polygamy in Islam and they do not think it's morally wrong. after all, if it was all about doing wrong in the eyes of God then disasters should have been eating the face of the Earth, and we should have been extinct by now.

I don't want to say that your professor is wrong, I am also a catholic, however, I can't agree to what she has said. I believe that God is good, not just to those who are righteous but also to those who needed Him the most. Religion is a very tough subject to raise, for it is only through our faith that we are in touch with HIM...disaster is possible everywhere, and I believe that those things happen not because God is punishing a certain place or certain people...disaster happens because of people, yes, but it does not necessarily mean that it is punishment, but because people are abusing the nature...i think it is more of losing balance in the nature...all of us are sinners, and if we will see the disasters as punishment, then I guess maybe even us are not breathing at this very moment...I am not saying that the people in the area you have mentioned should not be bothered of their sins, the point is I just believe that God's love is vast that no man can measure it much more to say and judge who is being punished or being rewarded by God...
