I know a number of you would have the experience of traveling by air and like you I am sure you would have gained numerous invaluable experiences to share.
However, I just have to share this article which really bears a lot of essential knowledge for all. This article is actually a compilation of pilots' truths which are actually very relevant like why are shades being lifted during landing, removing of headphones, cellphone ban and many more.
One of the most memorable ones I liked is one where a comment was made by a captain of a commercial airline on the seat belt and I quote: “Most of you wouldn’t consider going down the highway at 60 miles an hour without your seat belt fastened. But when we’re hurtling through the air at 500 miles an hour and we turn off the seat belt sign, half of you take your seat belts off. But if we hit a little air pocket, your head will be on the ceiling.”
How right....?

asyria51,
Just like to add that it is not only when cabin crews start strapping in that indicates danger. Frankly, the entire duration of the flight is actually dangerous because there are times the cockpit cannot spot an air pocket in time to warn the cabin. In my experiences, I had actually seen cabin crews and unfastened passengers "flying" around the cabin.
I hope that you would remember to strap up even when the seat belt sign is off, I know it can be uncomfortable. But, it sure beats to be safe then sorry.
Take care.

i've flown numerous times and have had numerous experiences. i last flew about two weeks ago. in what was one of my scariest experiences, we were through thick pockets of cloud and the airplane was having really scary turbulences. then suddenly there was this jolt, a violent jerk where everyone got thrown up from there seats. just one or two rows ahead of us, we saw a mother and her baby reaching almost the ceiling right above her. i don't know how far up i got thrown up myself though! so i guess the pilot's words about the seat belt thing sure make sense, and i'm sure there must be similar reasons for the other precautionary measures too.

junil_jk,
Well, you've covered a very relevant chapter on turbulence here and I just have to add that the experience is rampant with busy traffic space.
Also, I am sure you would be voting against one of the budget airlines proposal to have standing seats. Which at the end of the day will literally make us live living projectiles 30,000ft above the ground.
Take care and have a pleasant trip.

HOWEVER, I DO THANK YOU FOR SHARING THIS AS IT HAS HELPED TO UNDERSTAND THE DO'S AND DONT'S OF FYING IN A MORE COMPREHENSIVE WAY. but I stil WISH THAT i COUD SLEEP ON A PLABE DURING A NIGHT FLIGHT
Apologies for going into caps.

cynthiann,
I am glad that you've found this article informative and helpful, although I must admit that it is not giving you a clue on overcoming your sleeping problem.
Anyway, like on land you can always try having a glass of milk or hot beverage where it actually could help with your body to calm and settle down. I do not about you but I've always found this effective when I have a problem sleeping.
Hope this will be of help here. Take care.

Yes its true, when passengers are all inside the plane and are ready for take off there's regulation that all phone must be off or any devices that have frequency on it , don't know if its the right term it really interferes in the communication between the plane the ground radios who are clearing the space for the plane to take offs. This are all precautionary measures and are pre requisites in all types of transportation either by air or sea.

I have often wanted to travel but like with anything I think I can wait. I was hoping to put my husband and son on a plane, just a small trip since I think they would find it exciting but I'm fearful. I guess if we go we'll all go together. This article didn't help much Skysuccess.

PDBME2,
I am sorry if you are even more jittery after reading this but it is the last thing on my mind.
I hope that you would speak to someone to try and overcome this phobia and take that trip where you intend to send your husband and child on. Maybe a short 1 hour flight destination for a start. Let me assure you that you actually need to experience it to beat that fear.
Again, my apologies here.
