Basing opinions off of hearsay.

I hate when people base their opinions on something that someone else said happened or someone else said they heard happened. I never really form an opinion unless I was there and I knew what happened. Other times, I remain neutral and refuse to even form an opinion because I only know what I heard, as opposed to what I have seen.

I have to say that I do base opinions on what I've heard. You would know basically nothing if you ignored everything about an event you've heard about but was not there. I mean that's like saying you don't really have an opinion on whether the holocaust happened or not because you weren't there and you've only heard about it. Are you talking about gossip and rumours though, 'cos that would make a lot more sense.

Well obviously stuff that has historical documentation I would believe. I was basically talking about the usual stuff where people talk about rumors. Things that we hear, that range from the absurd to the hurtful and everywhere in between. Thank you for your response. It is much appreciated and it contributed to the topic well. Have a nice day and thanks.

Yeah I would like to think I don't base my opinions on people from what people have told me about them. Ultimately I don't, I try to treat them the same as I would have if I hadn't heard the latest thing they'd done but I have to admit I do judge a bit. I try not to but its hard forget that "she had an affair with the boss" or something like that.

Me too! My mother has this annoying habit of making up facts to support her opinion. It drives us all crazy! Some people can't just accept that they have no basis for their opinions other than hearsay. Or they do not know that hearsay is just gossip. I mostly keep my peace, but sometimes, I can't stop myself my eyebrows from going up and saying "passing off gossip again, are we?"

Right off of the top of my head, I can make up a bunch of things. Or I can interpret evidence in such a way that it does back up my opinions. Does not make it true after all. Thank you for your response. It is much appreciated and it contributed to the topic well. Have a nice day and thanks.

I heard from my friend Alex that this was a really bad thing to do. (evil grin) OK, seriously, you are right of course. You don't have the full story that way, and you may jump to entirely the wrong conclusion without all the information.

Its best to look at things from all sides. Plus if the information comes from human beings, it should be taken very carefully. We are not perfect and we are prone to mistakes. Thank you for your response. It is much appreciated and it contributed to the topic well. Have a nice day.
