Deathly Harrows--too scary to see in the theater?

I am faced with a big dilemma--I am not sure if DH will be too scary for my kids on the big screen. My sons are 9 & 8, and they REALLY want to see Deathly Hallows as soon as it comes out. They have seen all of the other HP movies, but never at the movies--we have always waited until the movie came out on DVD. And, of course, this one is darker and more violent than any of the previous HP movies. On the flip side, they have read Deathly Hallows, and, of course, are older now. Any thoughts? Will you bring your younger kids to see DH in the movies, or wait until it comes out on DVD?

well, they've read it so they know what to expect from it. i'd say go for it. :)

I think seeing it may be more intense, but you are right, they already know the story, so it won't surprise them.

I'm not sure what the ratings are gonna be like, but i think you should totally let them see it in the theatre. Whats the difference ? I mean its the same movie no matter where you watch it. But in a cinema there are lots of other people and kids, so it's even a better experience.

That's a good point about having other kids around, but it's not really the same movie in the theater as it is at home. First, the screen is much smaller! And it is much quieter at home, too! But, more importantly, we as parents can fast forward or mute any scene that frightens the kids (or pass over it entirely) if we are watching it at home. And many parents watch the movie first to make sure it's ok for kids. That's why some parents only let their kids watch movies, or at least certain movies, at home.

Well, when they released the PG-13 Harry Potter movie, many were not satisfied so they quickly changed it back to just regular PG. I think kids aged 8 to 9 could watch these movies, they're not really scary...

The earlier ones are not that scary, but some of the concepts are--Cedric and Dumbledore dying, for instance. And of course when Harry loses Sirius Black, the only "parent" he has--this can be scary for kids. It's not the violence so much as the darkness that concerns me.
