Why stop there, what other necessities in life should the taxpayers foot the bill for? Apparentlyl "Rights" means that everyone should have to pay more in taxes to make sure no one has to actually work for anything. It's all "Free", the only price we have to pay is our freedom.

its a safety net teddy. and there is no reason why a rich country shouldn't have one. you can cry about it all you like. i bet if you are ever unlucky enough to need it you'll quickly change your tune.

What part of "rich" didn't you understand? JB implies that because we're a "rich" nation, it should be the responsibility of the government to "take care" of everyone... which is class warfare thinking in the first place. I also never said anything against a safety net. Once again, JB is twisting the discussion to what he wants it to be.+

So, now you have a problem with what exactly...the food stamp program...the free or reduced lunch program...housing assistance to low income families? What about the Welfare to Work program that provides educational and job skills training to people on welfare, assists with job placement and childcare? I would prefer that children have food to eat instead of begging on the street and someplace to call home instead of living among possibly dangerous strangers in a shelter...even the really poor ones...so I don't mind my tax dollars being used for those programs. If I think of any other necessities that we as a society should help the most vulnerable among us with I'll be sure to let you know.

Did I say anything about a problem? All I asked is what you would suggest be the next necessity the government should take responsibility for.

You said it youself, Spalladino, it creates a dependancy on the government. The more people the government can make dependent on it, the more power it can take from the people.

Actually, that's not all you said. your OD reminded me of my 4 year old grandson stomping his foot and claiming that he never gets to do ANYTHING whenever it suits him to say it. "Apparentlyl "Rights" means that everyone should have to pay more in taxes to make sure no one has to actually work for anything." This is not the purpose of the programs you zeroed in on in such a general way. "It's all "Free", the only price we have to pay is our freedom." BTW, how do these programs cost us our freedom?

Maybe the democrats could initiate a new program where you can sign up to have your entire paycheck given to the government, and then the government will take care of you. This would be a voluntary program at first, then after a careful propaganda campaign it would become mandatory, and then forced. We all like it when someone gives us help, but the basic question is, "Is it right for me to have this money, knowing that I did not earn it, but rather it came out of another person's back pocket?"

nah, just let people starve and be homeless. course you'll still need taxes, just don't use them to pay for essentials.

When government's primary solution for the needy is to dish out other people's money, things get out of hand. Things are way out of hand now. I do not believe government is the only option for people who have needs. But if in fact it is, then the current state shows without a doubt why the government welfare solution was wrong from the beginning.

Just an example of one of those freeloaders. A homeless man using the benefits of a shelter while trying to get back on his feet finds a bag full of $3,300.00 And he hunts down the student who lost it, and makes sure he gets it back. These are people of character on those programs. Give them some respect, Ted. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/11/18/homeless-man-turns-in-bac_n_785558.html

There are many people of great character who are poor and need help. I never said there weren't. Kudos to this man and his great character!

You see, ladybug, this is what happens when you generalize about people. I've been coming down very hard on the adult, childless residents of homeless shelters because by and large they're not the best examples of decent Americans. And here you are with a wonderful example of one. I still don't want children sleeping in shelters, where there are too many strangers...too many dangers...and it's not a stable environment when there are programs available that will give them their own beds at night...but I will concede that there are decent people there too.
