How do bots work in PTC sites?

I've been a member in numerous PTC sites and almost all of them conduct cheat check in between ads. This step is to prevent bots from auto clicking the ads. But I still don't really understand what the bots are and how they operate in PTC sites. Does anyone of you use bots before? How do they work?
