I've decided to attend an anime con for the first time in my life, so I need a lil bit of help with choosing the costume I'll make. I want it to be simple and warm, and an awesome look. So, since it's my first time going to such a thing, I was wondering... what does people do there? Thanks a lot in advance!

Awesome, have fun! I'm not sure what the conventions are like in your country but I've been to conventions in the USA and the UK and I know they're very different. Twelve conventions so far, Sixteen if I count the mini conventions with my friends every summer. In the UK we spend a lot of time in the bar socialising, and have a damn good dance. In the USA there seems to be a lot more in-accomodation socialising. I like both but I know there's a difference so someone from Tel Aviv might be your best source of info about what to do. There should at least be panels to go to and something to watch - even the smaller cons here have that and it's fun, not to mention sometimes a chance to see animes you've been interested in trying that haven't been available to you or you've been waiting to try. There will probably also be a dealers room with lots of tempting things to buy! You might also see people wandering around with asian ball jointed dolls which is always a fun introduction to anime cons. I swore I'd never have one but now I have 11. As for a costume, what anime or games are you a fan of? I've made vergil's costume before now, which was warm, Cloud Strife's advent children costume which was very warm, and several final fantasy eight costumes all of which where hot. There's also traditional Japanese outfits that are good for walking around in conventions. I only have one piece of advice when making your costumes, remember that even if there aren't pockets, you should put pockets in or have a bag with you to carry water and money (not to mention the swag you get from the dealers room!) because the costumes can get hot if you're inside in them for a while, and it's very easy to get dehydrated. Have fun! (I should get working on my next costume, damn. Five months til my next convention!)

Oh wow, thanks a LOT! I suppose you were talking about kimono when you mentioned the traditional Japanese outfit. I guess it's the simplest costum I could choose... I wonder if it's warm enough for the winter. Good luck in your next anime con! XD

Kimono, Yukata etc. You can source them from Ebay quite easily or make them pretty simply with patterns. And they're quite warm to wear if worn in the traditional way with multiple layers and undergarments. I hope you've found something suitable!

Oh wow, that's really cool. I've always wanted to attend an anime convention but never got to since they are so far from where I live. Which anime convention are you attending if I may ask? As for the costume, you should pick something from a show you like. I know some people who cosplay and they've told me that you should go easy the first time you do it. Choosing someone that has a simple costume is the best way to start then you work your way up to the more complicated looking characters. So, if you'd list some shows/games you like I could probably give some suggestions. And from my friends who have attended some conventions they've told me that you just browse around. They do sell merchandises there. There are also various booths and places that feature different activities, like panels for people related to the anime industry speaking at and other things. I don't know, it all depends on the convention itself because different places do different things.

It'll be in Tel Aviv, that's all I know I like many animes, so it's kinda difficult to choose... I guess I'll make a list of characters and browse through it some time later.

Well, I've never been to an anime con, but I've been to lots of science fiction conventions. IF you really want to go in a costume, pick one that meets your needs of simple and warm, if you have any idea of actually looking close to who you are choosing to dress like, its best if you have some way of adding to your appearance to look the role, for example, if the one you are going to try and look like has blue hair, well, dye your hair blue... A lot of people don't try to do costumes the first time they go, I know I didn't, even tho I owned a black cape, I didn't wear it. Generally, I'm going to guess they have video room/s, probably a panel/discussion room, an art show to buy art by either pros or fans of the shows, and a dealer's room to get goodies. There may even be some role playing games, for the gamers who might be playing in a anime off shoot universe. Now, when I used to go to cons, they sometimes - depending on the kind of convention - had a anime thing going on, for example, having 2 or 3 video rooms, one for anime, one for TV shows and one for maybe movies. They might have more than one panel - tho honestly I don't remember there being panels on anime back then... but it has been a while. So, I suggest you might try a generic costume, say a soldier of one of the shows or the like, and get your feet wet this first time. You might be able to connect with people who are already costuming in your area and get involved if that's what you want to do.

wow that's cool. i've never attended an anime convention before and i really want to. unfortunately, there's no such event near our residence. about the costumes, choose something that can easily be distinguish or those that are distinct. examples are kaito kid costume, naruto or inuyasha. with just one look, everyone will be able to distinguish the character you'll portray. anyway, enjoy the convention. it'll surely be fun being with lots of anime fans.

I hope its not too late, I think the most simple anime costume that is warm when it comes to look will be arcued: http://arka_voltchek.pagesperso-orange.fr/perso/arcueid_copiep.png Its one of the most easy costumes ever... Or maybe you can just wear any clothes you wanted and wear a catear headband in your head. catgirls are very popular in anime conventions. There are simple catears hats and catears headbands you can do at home.
