My cat doesn't recognize his new scratch pad

Hubby bought our cat a new scratch pad because he shredded his cardboard one to get to the catnip in it. He doesn't seem to recognize that is meant to be a scratch pad. He plays with the ball toy on it but won't scratch on the pad. Is there a way to teach a cat to use a cloth scratch pad?

Have you tried putting dried cat nip on the scratch pad part?

Try putting some cat nip on the pad. If it's an upright type, just put some cat nip in your hand and rub it on the pad and your cat will pick up the scent and start using it again. We have this toy with the ball going around and around and it has a scratch pad in the center with cat nip under it. My cats go nuts when I put a new pad in! They want the cat nip! lol Once they get the cat nip, they're all nutty and silly. I bought lots of toys for them to play with when they get like that and I get a lot of laughs watching them.

I put some catnip on it and he scratched it a little. It is round and goes on the floor with a toy ball in the middle. He was playing with the ball before but not the scratch pad. He has only ever had cardboard ones.
