Oops, I need to decide what to do about my finger

Lol, so earlier today I jammed my finger. At first it was an 'oww' moment, but I didn't think anything of it. So I was looking down at it and I noticed it was swelling a little. So, I decided to take off the ring I had on that finger, I used cold water, soap, and oil. It would not come off and it was a little bit painful to shove it back in place. I figured that as long as the place it sits doesn't swell I'm good. Well, the ring still slides around where is is, but the whole rest of my finger is HUGE. It's not discolored or anything, so I'm pretty sure it's not broken... but what if it is? When should I go to the ER about this? Or is their another way to safely get the ring off my finger. Some way to get the swelling down long enough to take the ring off and let the finger swell and heal naturally?
