Why do people shelter themselves after someone close has been lost? What finally motivates this person to participate in society once again?

When we lose someone close to us, we just want to shut out the world. We think it will lessen our pain. Contact with others is too hard to bear until we can come to terms with our loss. We don't want to socialize until we feel we can live again.

I believe it's called "moaning". After going through loosing someone, I believe almost everybody needs sometime to moan their loss. We need to deal with the emotions, especially emotion that is as strong as loosing someone close. When we finally have some sort of closure, whatever it may be for different people, that's when we come out of our little shelter & join the society. Different people have different ways of dealing with the loss of their loved ones. I personally know of few people that surrounded themselves with people when they have lost people that were close to them.
