Hot, flat, crowded and with some defects

Since my early childhood I have always knew that American cars "eat" a lot more of gasoline per 100 kilometer than the cars produced in other countries. But up to now had never thought of the reasons - why it's so? I still don't know the right explanation. It might be the attitude of Americans like "we don't care, we have enough of oil", it could also be a pressure from the oil industry or something other. But American writer Thomas L. Friedman by his newest book "Hot, Flat and crowded" has encouraged me to get interested in these subjects. The topic about the consumption of oil is just one of the tens and hundreds of exciting issues I found in this book which I have began to read just recently. Of course, there are also features I don't like about his writing style. He's too wordy, repeating the same things again and again. The book could be shortened till some 200 pages instead of almost 500 it's written. The same defect I noticed in his previous book "The World is Flat". Have you read anything of T.Friedman? How do you like him?
