The Government employees union is the single largest union in the U.S. In light of the recent reports of the high number of goverment employees who are tax cheats, is it time we privatize as much government as possible? Should we cut 10%, 20%, or all the way down to only essential (and Constitutional) government functions?

If the private sector can do the job then let them do it. They can do most thing better, faster and cheeper than the government.

A lot of people don't realize that government jobs actually hurt the economy. They think a job is a job but that's not the case. Private sector jobs are the only ones that drive our economy. We desperately need to downsize government. It has become so bloated that it can't even keep tabs on itself let alone anything else. We have far too many government agencies and jobs that aren't needed, are useless and ineffective. It should be gradually trimmed back to bare essentials only through a long term plan to permanently downsize government. Simply privatizing some of the work won't do any good though if the government (us taxpayers) is still footing the bill paying a private contractor. The only real savings in this case would be in slightly more competitive wages/benefit packages and maybe increased efficiency do to market competition for the work. We need to completely eliminate useless federal government agencies and positions that are not needed. Many could be managed much more efficiently at the state level. Some simply have outlived their very reason for being and are just not needed any longer. Something as simple as staffing levels for congressmen and senators is a good place to start. They do not need anywhere near the numbers of employees that they have. The problem is that when they create these positions, it's almost impossible to eliminate them but it's something that HAS to be done. There are many other areas of the budget that need to be cut besides just government employees and if they don't start doing it soon, the national debt will continue to grow to the point that it will become unsustainable, which will mean a total collapse of our monetary system. In other words, our money will be worthless. Don't think it can't happen. It can and will if they don't take steps to balance the budget and reduce the debt.

I say we whittle it down to Constitutional functions and leave the rest to states,. The cost of our Government has gotten so out of control. The fact that there can be so many discussions on possible programs to cut, may be a good indicator that we have way too many programs.
