Would you feel safer if your neighbor was a cop?

neighborhood safety with a cop - cop as a neighbor

I used to live in a place where having a police officer living in the neighborhood was considered dangerous. Although they don’t advertise what they do for a living, most of us in the neighborhood were just concerned that their work might follow them home. Specially if he was a detective, and working with dangerous criminal organizations. We’ve moved since then and are living in our current address for more than 5 years. The next door was just recently bought, and have not really interacted with the new neighbor who usually keeps to himself. Yesterday, I realized that my next door neighbor is a cop. I wouldn’t say that our current place is as dangerous as our place, but I do feel safer knowing what my neighbor does for a living. How about you? If you knew that a cop was living next door, would you feel safer?

No i wouldn't unless he was on My payroll! Oops I sound like a Don! Wait a minute I like that! Lol! No I wouldn't feel any safer because he was a cop. Anyone can find anyone else. And if he is an " honest" cop in a corrupt force , he Will be a target. And if he is "on the payroll" Internal Affairs will be after him.

What do you call a female don? Haha! I could totally see that Sarah. I think you have the personality for it. I just wonder what would you have him do? Maybe make life a little miserable for all the people you don't like.

Why thank you! No a cop on the take would be my eyes and ears within the department. If some legit cop gets too close to the operation , he/she would let me know. then I'll handle it.

I don't feel one way or the other. There are worse and better people than that to have as a neighbor. I always smile at anyone dressed in a police uniform. They've got a tough job to do. I couldn't imagine having to deal with criminals all day. I would be very concerned if a family member decided to become a cop. I would worry about their safety.

I think that should be the correct attitude. Not to feel one way or the other. But sometimes, you can't help but question about safety when they are close by, and you have little kids around. I'm sure that they have tough jobs. And it is sometimes unfair that we question safety outside their job. But sometimes, it helps to be aware. Thanks.

Hi. bounce58. Yes, I would feel more safer just as long as this cop was not a dirty cop and if the neighborhood that I live in has many crimes that takes place too. I also would be on my peach and queues because I don't want to say or do anything crazy in front of him so that he could lock me up, you know.

Overall, I think it would make the neighborhood better. Specially if everybody have the same attitude as you cream. That crime would lessen, and everybody would be in their best behavior all the time. Thanks.

I guess I would feel safer knowing there was a police officer next door. I had never eally thought about the point you made about their work following them home but that is a possibility too.

One response here said that maybe I was just watch a lot of cop shows, referring to polices officer's jobs following them home. I guess it doesn't really happen that often, making it relatively safe to have a cop-neighbor. Thanks Jen.

Hi bounce58, I don't live next door to a cop, but there a few who live in our gated community. I do feel comfortable living in close proximity to cops. I think the only ones who should have a problem living next door to a cop are the criminals who are involving themselves in deviant acts. People who obey the law's of society should have not to worry about. I do see your point, however, about the possibility of the criminal element finding the cop resident and have some kind of confrontation, which could include a shootout, putting neighbors and passer-byers in danger. The odds for a neighborhood shootout varies. Depending on which neighborhood one lives. Lower social economical neighborhoods are where one would have more worry about living next door to a cop. Middle and upper class neighborhoods are not exempt, but less expected to have such activities.

All gated communities are not high end; definitely not the one I live. We are just all working people getting along with our lives. There are good and bad neighbors in every line of work you can name. Some cops are good and some are not; I am not going to assume that they are all the same.

I came from a place where a cop living in a high end gated community is already suspect. Knowing what their salary range is, yet being able to live in an expensive village tells you something about their personality. Although admittedly, this has nothing to do with safety, still I would rather live somewhere else if that were the case.

I actually feel fairly safe with where I live right now and I don't know that having a cop in the neighborhood would really make much of a difference. However, I also know that there are some neighborhoods around here where cops are able to get better deals on houses because of the fact that the houses are in areas that are higher crime areas. I think that this is a great incentive for a police officer to have and I know that I would feel safer if I lived in one of those neighborhoods.

Well, that is a good incentive to buy houses. Although they might have to live in that place to 'clean' the neighborhood a bit. But I think it would be great to know of police officers who could also tell me where the bargain places are. Thanks.

Not really no. We have a cop for a neighbor. Granted, he lives further up the street. Not like he's right next door. His big ole police car is there for everyone to see. That didn't keep our home from being broken into 4 years ago. My dog gives me a greater sense of security.

It's either thoss robbers that got into your house were very courageous, or very stupid. That even after seeing the car outside at your neighbor's house, they still got the nerve to come in. Unless of course they are not from around there. I think so too that the dog is a better alternative. No fuss and very loyal. Thanks.

The place where I used to live, there were a lot of corrupt cops too. That's why it reflected on safety when they lived close by. And that was something I had to take notice of with kids around. Thanks.

spying on neighbors - spying keyhole
Have you seen Lakeview Terrace? That was a different take on the bad neighbor scenario, especially when they are a cop. It was really good, crazy ending though, he just lost it. I don't really live in a dangerous area, but it is not the best place either. I would feel safer if an officer lived near. At my old apartments there actually WAS an officer who lived there, he actually worked on the SWAT team. I don't think he would attract dangerous people to him (mostly because people don't know who the SWAT team is especially due to their being heavily armored and covered). I think you've been watching a lot of tv, sure detectives get really into crimes, but there is a really slim chance of them attracting their work back home. If it was that common there would be a lot less detectives out there. I do realize some people live in pretty bad areas and having an officer in the neighborhood might not be good (but more for the officer not the neighbors). Anyway, I understand what you are saying but I wouldn't worry about it, my neighbor who lived one house away when I was little was also a cop and nothing bad every happened because of it.

I think most cops try to keep to themselves. They really don't try to attract attention to themselves. Maybe it's their policy, and the reason why they live pretty safe, both for themselves and the neighborhood. Thanks for the tip on 'Lakeview Terrace'. I might just pick that up for weekend movie night.

Hi bounce58. I think that I would defintely feel safer in my home if my neighbor was a cop. If other people knew that you lived in a cop's neighborhood, they might think twice about crime. Living next to a cop would give me a sense of security if nothing else.

I think most cops keep to themselves. And try not to draw attention to themselves, so I doubt that a lot of people would know. But if people did know, then I think it would be a lot safer. Yes I think it would give a sense of security, somehow. Thanks.

It does not matter if my neighbour is a police officer or not. What is important to me is that the neighbourhood has a sense of togetherness and will keep a lookout for each other. As they say, unity is a force.

I wish I was in that kind of neighborhood. In as much as I don't want people bothering me, I also try not to bother my neighbors. This attitude does not help the feeling of 'togetherness' in our neighborhood. But we do have strata management, and we have a manager that sorts-of take care of stuff.

If a robbery stays next to a police officer, do you think it is a safe place for him? Of course no. Not all of the policemen are good persons. Some of them are worse than the gangsters or the thieves. Bad policemen are just the license or authorized gangsters to bully people. However, I just hope that your neighbor is a good cop.

I'm sure that cops are people too. And like most people, some of them would be good, and some of them not-so-good. That's why there is always an element of danger living near one. So far, my neighbor keeps to himself. So no complaints from me. Thanks.

No, there wouldn't be a difference for me. I believe such a cop would have a full time job to do, and even when he gets back there is more family business for him to do. Even though they provide extra security for many people, that doesn't necessarily mean they will always respond to help. I believe that a person who is friendly and looks and takes note of my house would be much better. In the world we live in, closely connected neighbors provide more help than police.

I think that's why most cops keep to themselves when they live in a certain neighborhood. They try to separate their job from their family life. Although it might be a good thing to have them closeby, they might not be as helpful as we thought. Thanks.

Definitely not. How can I feel safe if I don't know what type of cop is he. Besides, we can get caught immediately if we make mistakes =))

Hello davidkwan95. Chances are you'll never know what type of cop he is. Because most of them try to keep to themselves, and not attract too much attention. Thanks.

I guess yes and no no, for the same reason as yours yes, for obvious reason I feel safer if the community works together I think the community I am in is pretty tough at crime and such

If the community itself is already active, and work their way in keeping bad elements in the neighborhood, then having cop-neighbors is not necessary. Everybody can watch after everybody. Thanks.

not at all!!So forget cops or police you can see on tv eheh in amny cases people doing this job are a bit strange in real life and so i don't think this fact can feel me more secure or the contrary..

I think I know what you mean by saying that cops are 'a bit strange'. I think most of the time, they try to keep to themselves, so as not to draw attention. And thereby not endangering the neighborhood. Sadly, this could be misconstrued as living 'a bit strange' by the neighbors.

hi bounce yes I think I would as we had one living inour old apartment complex and s everal times people benefitted with his being a cop. one of his neighbors were a cou ple of elderly women sharing a two bedroom apartment. One lady was having problems breathing and her companion had trouble trying to call the paramedics so she went next door to the police officer's house and told him of her sister's feeling ill. He went to their apartment and called 911 at once then asked the well sister if she had any baby aspirin. He gave that to the ill sister as he was sure she was having a heart attack. He s tayed with thej til the paramedics arrived. the whole complex heard about this and he became pretty popular'with the tenants.

I guess it would be beneficial to be living near somebody who would know what to do in case of emergencies. This is not saying that we don't know ourselves, but it is just a great comfort (maybe a convenience), to have somebody like that around. It is helpful, thanks.

i've never tried having a cop for a neighbor but i guess that would feel safer. recently though i've been watching all these secret agent movies and it made me feel like living anywhere near them is dangerous. living near the cops/police would be ok, but living near agents like those cia and ex-cia people (not that there's a chance that i would live near them) would probably be a no no.

I guess living near secret agents would be even more dangerous than living near cops. For cops, I think you'd at least get warnings, or you would know, and you can therefore do something about it. If they were agents, you wouldn't just know. And if there was any danger, you'd be in it before you even know it. Thanks.

I think it'd be dangerous to have a neighbor as a cop because the cop could have been linked to something for work, or even arrested someone or shot someone and then the family of whoever he shot, arrest could try to find where he lives and do something to their family or whichever the case is. I think it's dangerous..

Although it is a bit unfair to the cop who is only doing his or her job, I tend to agree that there is a sense of danger if you happen to be neighbors with one. I imagine that they will always try to keep to themselves, which is a bit sad because they wouldn't really get the chance to know their neighbors.

Hello! I think if the cop is respectable and a really good cop, then I would feel safer to have the cop as a neighbor. However, if it's the other way around then, I will have to find another home. I would feel threatened if the cop is not trustworthy and I think for a good cop to be a neighbor would mean that the neighborhood I belong to is a peaceful and very reliable place in case of emergency or in any bad circumstances. Cheers!

You're right that it all depends on the personality of the cop. Even though, a good one would still bring a certain amount of danger, at least it is not so likely. And I agree that it could bring some peace to the neighborhood too. Thanks.
