Steampunk, Cyberpunk, or A little of both?

What do you prefer: Steampunk, Cyberpunk, or a little of both? I'm a mostly Steampunk lady, but I do like some things from the Cyberpunk realm so I suppose a bit of both. You know if I'm going to hang with a Mechanist I might as well get used to their quirky gadgets that I have no use for.
Most of my wardrobe is from all over the place, I don't think I've bot anything or any one item at only one shop. I tend to shop online, in thrift stores, and estate sales. Last summer we saw a cast iron Victorian era stove for sale that actually worked with modern settings. I was so bummed that we didn't have the funds at the time because at two hundred dollars it was practically a time steal!
So what is your style? How do you put your costumes together? Do you attend events?

well, I remember the cyberpunk sf books, even met William Gibson and Armadillocon was for years supporting the cyberpunk branch of sf... I haven't been to the con for a few years tho. I went to school with Bruce Sterling's ex-wife... I've met a lot of the local writers, as well as many from other places because of 'Dillocon.
However, I wouldn't say I'm THAT into it enough to costume about it... I'd rather just throw on a cape or my Who scarf and leave it with that...

SIX CHILDREN!!! ***thunk*** (sound of Elic fainting)
okay... I'd probably go with a future one... actually, "Elic Behexan" IS from the future... AND it/he's an alien...
okay, well, my friend who was making her own corset just moved back to the Dallas area, but she used those extra long zip-ties instead of whale bone - after all, whale bone is hard to come by these days...
she found a place on the internet that taught her how to make them...

A group I am a fan of on Facebook announced it months ago and it is basically a word of mouth spread the word sort of thing. Time Travelers day will start at Midnight on the 7th and last until midnight on the 8th. The idea is to pretend to be a time traveler but not tell anyone you are one. However you make reference to things in order to let on that you are one. The three types were Time Traveler from the past, so someone from the Victorian era ending up in our modern times. The second and third are either from a Utopian/Cliche future, or a Dystopian future. I'll be going with the easy one, Victorian because I just don't have the knack my hubby does for pulling off the future.
If we get to go out (we've got a snow storm coming this week after 12 inches this weekend), I'll be marveling at the technology but also showing extreme intimidation of these horseless carriages not powered by even steam.

Oh, I forgot to add that my corsets are faux corsets. They are not true Victorian ones because I've not been able to find someone to fit me and I've not made my own as of yet. After having six children my stomach is not what it used to be.

Is there a fancy name for the kind of person that will wear the clothes that are clean in the clothes basket? LOL!! No, seriously, I think that the clothes that I typically wear are mostly from the Steampunk realm. I definitely tend to look a lot more like a blue collar type of person than a white color person. I think that the reason for it is because of my husband's field of work. Of course, that also doesn't mean that I don't like to look feminine from time to time.

Dora-
I think I've been doing steampunk since I was a child but just did not know what it was called in terms of fashion. I always wore long skirts, Victorian style blouses, and dresses. The only thing I never had growing up was proper shoes for the style but as an adult I was finally able to buy a pair. I will tell you they are awful to break in.
I've had mine for a year but because I do not wear them year round they are taking a great deal of time to break in the leather. I'm thinking of going with a less traditional shoe and perhaps going with one that a more common person might have worn simply for the sake of my feet. During the summer I do not wear shoes, I wear sandals so I'm still trying to work that part out.

I have friends who are into Steampunk, but I am into Cyberpunk. I have always loved Cyberpunk, and I am trying to make some Cyberpunk costumes. Also, for those of you who are into Cyberpunk, one December 17, 2010, please go and see Tron: Legacy in any of your local theaters, it is guaranteed to be awesome! Also, see Neuromancer whenever it hits theaters, don't know when the release date will be, but I know it's going to be awesome.

It is so nice to see one other person, save our first poster, who actually knew what Steampunk/Cyberpunk was! Ok, I'm going to provide you with a few Cyber sites as that is my husband's niche and he was just putting together a wish list of things he wanted.
I can't wait for Tron to come out now that I know Jeff Bridges is in it. I was a bit miffed at first because I remember seeing the original in the theatre and thought they were ruining the legacy with a new one. However, now that I know Jeff is on board I'm all there!
I'm more of a Steampunk person and dress quite a bit in Victorian era pieces. Though traveling with a Mechanist I do like a few of the more Cyber pieces. I've not attended anything here at all. I missed ComiCon here and I'm still mad about not having the funds when they were here in MN. Next time though! I've joined a lot of groups via Facebook though and am coming into connections with many who do the Steampunk/Cyberpunk and getting loads of ideas, as well as some very cool friendships. Just today my husband and I went out Steam/Cyber to practice for the "Pretend to be a Time Traveler for a Day" event http://www.facebook.com/saracdanielson#!/event.php?eid=97666262433 . We had a blast!

I don't know where there are cyberpunk events in my area, and I don't have my costume finished and perfected yet, so I am waiting for that. Right now, I attend comic book conventions as a volunteer (because I can't afford admission), but when I do get the money, and when there is one in my area, you bet I will be attending in costume.

hi I guess I am way b ehind the times but at 84 I really do not care.
I never cared for the punk style for myself and now at my age I would
look like I had lost my mind or had regressed to the teens or early twenties. I love the comfy style, denim skirt and pretty feminine
tops of my favorite colprs,. blues, greens, and all shaded of
lavendar and purple.so cyberpunk and steampunk are greek to me.
I love to look feminine and as pretty as I can look at my age. I do
have pretty blue green eyes and white blonde hair. I play to my
good points and downplay my not so good points. talking of victorian
era stoves, all my life I have wanted to buy a victorian era home
but alas no money. but one can always dream. so I guess I am not a punk dresser, I do not know if comfortable is deemed a style but I love it and I have always thought some women wear
a scowl all the time, and I wonder if maybe the clothes they have on maybe causing so much discomfort they have to scowl.lol lol lol.

Hatley-
I'm not sure if you saw the other links I already posted to one responder but they have some good articles.
Steampunk by definition is dressing in the fashion of the "steam" era, meaning most people dress in Victorian clothing. Cyberpunk is defined by dressing in era clothing from sci-fi time travelers, so most dress in a cross between Victorian era clothing/western clothing of that time period adding in futuristic gear such as mechanical arms, shielding, etc. The picture I've attached is an example of some who are part of a Steampunk group in NY. It is not the same as the "punk" from the late 80's.
Enjoy. Namaste-Anora

Another way to liken it is to look at authors. Jules Verne would be the epitome of Steampunk, and Issac Asimov would be the epitome of Cyberpunk. Hope that helps give a better picture.

I like both. Haven't attended a party wherein there wasn't any theme for the costume. But I guess it depends on my mood and the type of people in the party. If i'm hanging out with computer techy people, I'll go cyberpunk of course! but if not, steam punk is easier to get toegether.

I'm one of the few women who don't care what my clothes are like as long as they keep me warm and covered. I can dress up if I go to the rare event or visit but mostly I'm a hermit--I live alone and can go for days without actually talking to another human being. So I don't have to care about how I look because I'm the only one who does!
When I do go out or see other people I have a nice pair of pants and a couple of nice shirts that I can wear. I don't have to spend a lot of money on clothes, which is good!

Never heard of these brands of clothing...at home I'm a sweats type of person, anything that is comfortable I will wear, I like dresses when I am going somewhere nice, and when I am going out to have fun, jeans and a t shirt or hoodie, depending on the weather.
