Reading creates vivid and imaginative dreams?

I stumbled across a quote once in a book (I think it was Wormwood by G.P. Taylor, and it really wasn't that great of a book as a whole) where one character told another that reading was the best way to make one have vivid and imaginative dreams. That one sentence has stuck with me, and I think I agree. I'm an avid reader and I'm told I have rather exotic dreams. My dreams often are very vivid and have intricate and imaginative plots. Epic quests, mythical creatures, and good vs. evil battles are often factors in my dreams. So does reading have an impact on what you dream at night? What do you think? How much do you read and what are your dreams like?

I don't read nearly as much as I used to, but since I totaled a car on the freeway in 1972 I haven't remembered most of my dreams, in fact, it was almost 5 years before I remembered any of them. But my mother and then my roommates in college, said I would cry out in my sleep, so I'm probably just as happy not to remember those dreams!

Ouch. That doesn't sound good. Sounds like you lost almost total dream-recall. You might be able to re-train yourself to, if you wanted to that is. If you're convinced you're better off than it's your choice. I really like my dreams so I wouldn't like not being able to remember them at all.

I like to read lots of different types of books. I do think reading makes me dream more. I never actually thought about it until I read this discussion but everytime I am reading a book I will dream. The dream will usallu tie into the book somehow, maybe one of the characters will be in my dream, or my dream will take place from a place in the book. I would say my dreams are inspired in someway by what I am reading. I dont read enough though...I wish I had more time for a good book. I havent been able to read a book since I was pregnant with my son who is now almost 9 months old. That is way to long...I must find a good book soon and take some me time...and then get to dream again! Great discussion!!

Well I hope you find some time to get to reading again! Reading is such a joyous and wondrous thing! Well I think so, I know loads of people who don't agree.. but they just break my heart. I love dreaming about my favorite books! It's wonderful to meet your favorite characters, even if it is only in a dream! It's like they visit you to spend more time with you... even when you're not reading! Hope you read and dream again soon!

Aw... well I'm not usually sad when I finish a book. I'm usually happy if the book ended well and true I won't get to know what happens to my characters after the book ends, but I like to assume they lived happily ever after. (Yes, I'm a sucker and I love Happily Ever After endings.)

I have to make time to read. I don't have much time, but I can't give up my books! I've never read anything by Anne Rice... I know she's famous for those vampire novels. I'm not a vampire fan, and I don't really want to dream about them. lol

"Reading maketh a man". That was a great saying of old. Sadly, not may read these days apart from newspapers. The advent of TV and movies pre-occupies most of today's youth and so now they are having problems even with spelling and sentence construction. There is nothing like reading. It broadens the horizon and fattens our vocabulary bank. Yes, it brings imagination to the fore and we relive our lives in that make-believe world of reading.

It breaks my heart! One of my college professors said that a large number of her students turned research papers in written in TEXT SPEAK. In COLLEGE. That's just pathetic. I wish more people could discover the true joy of reading! There's all sorts of wonderful new worlds out there just wanting for us to take a peek inside the pages!

I'm a reader too and I dream a lot and yes like you my dreams are very vivid and detailed that I remember each and every one of them when I wake up. This is the first time that I've heard of that saying and now I know why I have vivid dreams. I usually dream of stories that I've read from the book and also my frustrations in life. I always dream. There's never a day that I don't dream in my sleep.

If you have a full sleep cycle, which if you're healthy and get more than an hour of sleep when you rest then you do, then you dream. Everyone dreams every night, it's just a question of whether or not you remember those dreams. You can improve your dream recall over time with practice. I've always had great dream recall and I rarely wake up and don't remember any dreams. I keep my own dream journal where I record all my favorite dreams! Ever tried it? It's fun!

i enjoy reading... and i do have vivid dreams. although my dreams tend to be about whats been going through my mind. Whatever it is that im dwelling on is usually what i dream about. and if i read before i go to bed i tend to dream about that. i guess it has to do with concentration.

That's an interesting thought. I do dream about what's going on in my mind quite a bit, but not all the time. Sometimes I dream about things that I haven't thought about in years. It's really weird. I'm staring to think that maybe there really isn't a formula. I do think that reading really enriches the mind and an enriched mind gives birth to new and vivid dreams.

I totally agree that reading a book will make our dreams often very vivid and have intricate and imaginative plots. Mythical creatures, good vs. evil are often the factors in our dreams. We imagine the characters and give a shape to that character while reading. That will be in our mind somewhere and when we sleep these come in the form of dreams.

I think books feed the brain better than any other form of entertainment! When we read we feed the imagination, and the imagination fuels our dreams! At least, I really believe so. I've always had a really active imagination and pretty wild dreams.

I read a lot and while I do not normally dream about the books that I am reading, sometimes I do. I think that reading does give my dreams more information to work with and to incorporate into my dreams so that they are more detailed and have more plot twists. After all, if you do not know that something exists or is possible how can you dream about these things. Reading is one way of broadening your mind and enriching your life, both in dreams and out of dreams.

I agree... reading does broaden your mind and enrich your life in and outside of dreams. I think dreams though are one of the major indicators of just how creative, imaginative, and broad your mind really is! It's like your mind is telling new stories for you. I don't always dream about the specific characters and stories in the books I read, but I do dream a lot about the kinds of stories that I read... and I'm met by new great stories that want to be told!
