I will suggest you go and have an xray on your ankle. This can ensure that you are not suffering from any fracture. After that, go for a MRI scan. This will reveal if it is your ligament or muscle that is causing it. I believe it is one of the three. It is unlikely to have ankle pain for 4-5 months.

I dont think I have fracture as I am getting pain only after running or playing. But I can go for MRI scan. Thanks, I will update you after the scan.

If you are very active and playing running sports all of your life, you may have arthritis in your ankle. This is where your ankle bones have rubbed together and worn away the cartilage between them, so now they rub up against each other and cause pain. This happened to my brother at a young age. I would see another doctor for a second opinion if I were you. That first doctor does not sound too smart: hot water will not help inflammation, and will actually increase it. He should have suggested COLD on your ankle for up to 15 min after sports, and perhaps a few times a day.

I think you should go back to your doctor. did he mention it if it is sprain or strain?. Sprains are injuries that affect the ligament and sprains are injuries that affect the muscles or tendons.
