Very Nervous About Flying Next Month

My husband and I are finally going to go on a trip next month. We'll be flying to Mexico and staying for about five days. I'm very nervous about flying. I have only flown about three times in my life and each time we had bad turbulence. I get very nervous when I fly and sometimes get motion sickness. So the last time I flew which was 7 years ago, I took an anxiety pill and a motion sickness pill. I would really like to hear how some people handle their fear of flying.

I actually have no fear of flying. I have flown lots of times and I love it. It is statistically safer than driving a car. I know you have probably heard that before, but it is true. The last flight I took was probably the hairiest of them all. (not that it was bad or anything) It was the first time that I had flown on a smaller aircraft and I had heard that the landing could be bad at this runway as it was really short as it was on a small island in the South Pacific Ocean. We had to circle the island a couple of times as it was a bit gusty so the pilot had a few attempts just trialling the wind and we landed quite smoothly eventually considering the wind. You have nothing to fear. Just enjoy the experience.

I hope that one day I won't have any fears of flying too. I just need to have a really good flight experience with no turbulence.

i've flown innumerable times over the last 15 years and it was only recently that i developed a fear of flying. i've experienced flying through various weather conditions, turbulences, even had emergengy landing, etc. at one instance we had to return to the same airport from where we took off due to bad weather after circling over our destination airport several times and had our flights cancelled for the next two days. air sickness's long gone, after my first few flights, and it's not a problem at all. ok, about your trip - u should try putting on headphones and listen to music during the trip. maybe even try and fall asleep that way. it'll really help u to not think about your anxiety. that's what i usually do and it really helps.

Did your fear of flying happen from the emergency landing flight that you were on? I am going to take a portable DVD player so hopefully that helps some.

and oh, u may fantasize about how u and your hubby would be enjoying your stay there while listening to ur favorite tracks! think about what u plan to do out there, about all kinds of Mexican flavors, etc. i'm sure it'll really help u during the trip and u'll find that the airplane had already touched down in Mexico when u return from your world of fantasy! have a nice trip!

no, it didn't happen from the emergency landing. the emergency landing happened more than a decade ago when i was still early in my teens because of a bomb scare. i don't know exactly what happened but we were stranded for several hours in an unscheduled airport. my fear of flying developed only recently, early this year to be precise. it developed after seeing pictures of air accidents and the increase in frequency of air crashes. just like that u know.

It's funny that I don't like heights but I love flying. I just think when we hit turbulence....bumps in the road. I think you are very safe unless you get a pilot with a deadwish which is highly unlikely. Remember more people die on the ground then from a plane crash!

My husband says the same thing, that the turbulence is like bumps in the road. Sure doesn't feel like it though.

Have you never flown because you're afraid to or just because you haven't had the opportunity? I used to be the type of person that always said I'd never fly too. But as I got older I realized that there are some places I want to see and I'll need to fly to get there. Would much rather drive though.

I wish I could give you some tips but I'm deathly afraid of flying and for that reason I haven't been home in 26 years. When I flew from Germany to America we had a lot of cocktails to drink so it didn't bother me to much but I'm to scared to get back.

Oh my gosh! It's been 26 years since you've been home? I'm a person who gets panic attacks and takes anxiety medication every day. But believe me if I had family that lived far away I'd make sure I flew to see them and find a way to get through the flight. Please consider seeing your family again. I don't want you to one day regret it.

Hiya Shar, Sometimes I would take something nice to look at something like a Photo or a Book that has enough interest to distract you from thinking of the same thing. I have been there too as I have had problems with the middle ear and it feels like it´s popping and you feel awful when you get up there. So try chewing something really fruity and tangy like sweets with a nice flavour and do all that´s possible to take your mind off the actual situation. You could also try and do Crosswords which although that does not sound like anything exciting it just might bring down your anxiety as you are giving your energy to something intellectual instead. If you can get someone if they are close to you to participate as well and see you through any distress. Only thing I can think of at the moment but that I would do if I had to fly again. Good luck and have nice Holidays.

It's funny how the mind likes to play tricks on us, isn't it? I'm going to make sure I have plenty of gum to chew. I'll take a crossword too but I think the motion of the plane will bother my reading.

About 20 years ago on a trip to Denmark, there was bad turbulance, and two tires exploded. They sounded like a bomb went off in the plane!! Since then I flew home from Denmark 3 weeks later, flew to Iceland twice, and flew to Phoenix three times. I'm not worried about flying, at all.

You are very brave. If I was on that plane when the tires exploded I would have had a panic attack.

Its always best to think of things positively instead of turning to your fears. I understand how it feels like especially when you went through a bad experience, however, it is much better to think of this experience as a new one and exciting, always get excited- how the place looks like or what are the things you look forward to like buying anything from the place. You can always be prepared though with these pill that you took few years ago but you must face this as much as you could. I used to be afraid of flying as well, but occasional travel is very helpful to me which I am getting used at. I usually bring something that I can divert my attention with like taking a book or something to listen to and a gum. Good luck on your trip and may you overcome this in a short period of time.

I know you're right about trying to think positive. Part of the problem is that I get panic attacks occasionally and I have to try not to think negative and about how high up we are in the plane. One trick that actually helped me a little the last time I flew was that I went into the bathroom on the plane and put on some makeup. Doing that just helped me focus on something else other than being up in the air.

I have flown all of my life and it was such a pleasurable experience when I was younger. Now it is just something to get through. I have friends who are nervous. I pray during take off and landing though. Also I have never been able to sleep on a plane - it is like I have to stay awake with (hopefully) the pilot.

The best time to fly us during summer season where the sky is clear. The clearer the sky is the smoother your ride will be that's why Airplanes try to avoid clouds as much as possible since this is where the turbulence occur. I have not been able to fly on an international flights but I heared that the worst turbulence occur during long flights, I heard that a plane will almost like fall from the sky a couple of feet as a result of turbulence so it's pretty scary.

Unfortunately the three times I have flown were not in the summer. I've had bad turbulence on all of them. Yes, it does feel like the plane is falling from the sky. I just pray that this flight is turbulence free.

Hello Shar19, I wish I could help But, I love flying !! I'am so envious of you. With me flying and boats are such an adventure. To me just being up in the clouds is so exciting. I do understand about the turbulance it can be scary. I always look at it like I'am on an amusement park ride..I wish I could help more. Just try think about other things, sleep if you can and please let me know how your trip was. But, most of all ENJOY YOURSELF.. don't let your fear stop you from enjoying life. Oh, and by the way I personally think driving in a car is way scarier...:) Have Fun, truckergirl

My husband tells me that turbulence is just like driving on a bump road. Yeah, right! Cars don't drop down in the sky like a plane does from the turbulence. Hopefully in time I'll get over this fear and it will be no big deal.

I fly often and have done so for years. I still get scared no matter how many times I do it still still freaks me out each time. I just flew out to another State last Wednesday and was in a small jet and that is one that I can not get use to as it has so much shaking and turbulence. I sit there quietly and pray a great deal each time, as I keep telling myself if it is not my time to go I will be okay. My ears get really painful as they get really plugged with air. So I always chew gum to allow the movement of my jaw to pop any air that gets trapped in there. Anytime I have not done this I come out with ear aches, so I always try to have gum in my purse each time I am flying. Take a good magazine and or book you can read, distraction helps somewhat to keep your mind busy. Good luck on your trip as I know how scary it is, I get back on a plane to return home in late December and am in no rush for the trip.

I am real scared in flying too. I only fly twice in my life and I survived the fear. I thought I was going to have a heart attack on my first airplane trip. I was really nervous so what I did since I can not sleep due to tension is I pray all the prayers I know and sing my National Anthem in my head. that diverts my mind from being real scared. I even recite this world on my head "We are going to land soon" and before I know it we are going out of the plane. Good luck on your trip. another tip is to hold your husbands hand especially if there is turbulence. I read somewhere that a simple touch will create a chemical reaction between bodies that releases a relaxing hormone.

Its just a fear of mind, you also know that. Now you have to find a way to control your fear. I give you simple tricks to get upon your fear. First don't tell everybody and also yourself that you have a fear of flying, by doing this you are increasing your fear. Tell yourself everyday that "wow, it will be fun to get on plane, as it is an adventure for me, i am waiting to get on plane.", by saying this you should also start believing this. repeat as many time as you can in a day. Believe me one day you get up from bed and your fear will be gone. This is all mental game. Put your right hand on your hear and say "ALL IS WELL".

I heard that some people very scared about flying on a plane went for a overcome fear when flying course. It was effective for most of the participants. I went on my first flight when I was 14 years old. I got terrible ear pain just before landing. Then when I was 24 years old I got given a pair of ear planes. They are small plastic screw like things that go in my ears that stop them hurting. I would suggest deep breathing and relaxation techniques. Maybe the day before you fly you could have a reiki session. Possibly you will have a smooth flight. Good luck.

I never knew they had a device for ear pain. I also get ear pain sometimes from flying. I'll check into that.

Don't worry, it will turn out to be a good journey. Sometimes I feel my ears are uncomfortable when it is flying. So I try to eat snacks or keep talking when I am in the plane:) It will be helpful. This is only one thing I am concered about. Actually the airplane journey is the safest. Just enjoy your trip next month. I love China

Because of some accidents I heard about airplanes then I was also thinking that what if it would happen to me also? But as I remembered my first time riding on it, when I went to Japan I felt many mixed emotions like exciting, interesting, and most of all scared. But thanks God nothing happened and I came to the place safe.

Don't fear as that will only make things worse and I know that sounds stupid. Try taking a sleeping tablet just as you arrive on the plane to help you get some rest. When I last flew there was really bad turbulence but one has to keep in mind it only lasts for a few minutes and you are safe. Good luck and hope this is your best flight yet :)

Arghh! That does not sound any good. I was in gradeschool when I had my first flight. I love sceneries so I don't get scared at all especially when taking off. Though I would admit, I am not a fan of roller coaster rides, space shuttle etc because I feel so scared of falling off. Not so sure why I am so brave during airplane rides. But so fortunate of me not be. I just hope one day you could totally conquer your fear and just enjoy the view while flying. =)
