I think after the success of the rescue of the Chilean miners I think that it has made the news that all the 29 miners(including two Britons) who were trapped underground in the New Zealand mine are believed to be dead after a second explosion. Thoughts and prayers go to all their families. I canot imagine how anyone can go down mines, they are really very brave!

This is a terrifically sad (understatement?) situation considering the hope that the families affected must have had knowing the success in Chile. Mining is a very dangerous industry, even in our part of the world, and that is easily forgotten by the rest of us. For so many there is little choice, or remain unemployed.

I think in the UK, now that mining has become a thing of the past, we don't really think about mining and the problems so much. Of course these sort of accidents were sadly all too common in our not so distant past!

I have a parallel conversation with a lot of Americans on mining. They moan about about the Arabs, but support Israel. I have reminded them that they have the technology to make oil from coal, given them by the Nazis. Some are indignant at this, others say it is too expensive. This usually caps my argument that they put money before freedom: the point being that they chose to embrace both and are now smarting from it!

I feel very sad that there has been a second explosion in the mine near Greymouth in New Zealand. I read about the mining incident and hoped as many of the miners as possible would be rescued. I felt especially sorry for the pregnant lady that has lost her partner. I know that mine work is very well paid but it can be dangerous. I think that all the members of the miners family must be devastated. People that work in a mine are incredibly brave. One man I read was running late and missed the bus to the mine. He must feel relieved that he didn't get to his place of work on that terrible day.

Yes I read tat, I expect he feels lucky but a little guilty too. It certainly is an awful job; I'm very claustrophobic so I just can't begin to imagine what it's like

I imagine the poor relatives were a little more optimistic because of the Chilean episode too!
