I suggest you watch 'the biggest loser'. It's a tv program about people competing to be thin. You'll see their motivation while exercising and trying to lose weight. These people are like obese and over-weight. You should watch it to get motivated.

Health, energy, confidence, better body image and self esteem... there are lots of reasons to motivate yourself to lose weight. I'm actually really skinny so I probably shouldn't be contributing to this discussion, but I'm very motivated to eat healthy and exercise all the time because I want to keep my body beautiful and healthy. I'm in great shape, and getting better all the time... I'm pretty confident about my weight (Other body image issues elsewhere! lol But of course I'm a girl.) and I'd really like to keep it this way as long as I possibly can!

I think a good motivation to lose weight is to think of the wardrobe upgrades you can make, such as a wider variety of clothes you can fit into that you couldn't before. Huge boost in self-esteem is another big one, and you'll live longer in the long run.

I don't really think that looks are the best motivation for losing weight. This tends to encourage an eating disorder, because there will always be somebody thinner, and because not everyone can actually attain the hollywood "ideal" (some people are beautiful and healthy at much higher weights) and too many people kill themselves or make themselves sick trying. I think focussing on health and energy levels are better. For example: I want to be able to run 5k. In your practicing to run 5k, you will definately lose weight if you have some to lose! Or: I want to be in good enough shape to have a healthy pregnancy when I decide to have kids. Or if you have kids: I want to be able to run around and play with them, I want to set a good example for them, etc. Or: I want to get my cholesterol or blood pressure down to a certain number. Or: I want to spend less money on food. My food budget needs to be under a certain amount, and I will only acheive that by buying more healthy food to make my own meals and buying less fast food. Or: I want my family to stop worrying about my health. Some people respond better to visuals. For example, if the doctor has given you a healthy number of calories to eat per day, multiply that by 7 to get your weekly calories, and make a pie chart where you color in sections as you eat that many calories. It will be easy to see if you are on track for the week or not. Motivation is a very individual thing, and many people struggle through several "rounds" of trying to lose weight before they identify a motivator that truly works for them. Smokers who are trying to quit often go through the same thing.

hi donnie! Yes, there are thousands of stuff nowadays out there to help one lose weight. You are right that it wouldn't work at all if you do not motivate yourself. I think you should first and foremost, tell yourself that you need to do it. Then ask yourself what your primary reason is for losing weight. To me, it's all about health. I have health issues that need to be dealt with and one of which is diabetes. In order for me to help control my diabetes, I need to lose weight. I guess most people try to do it for health reasons. Either they've got an illness that needs to be dealt with only by losing weight or just to look and feel good about themselves if they're within their target weight. And it may differ from person to person.
