It's all pants

The Ghanaian government has announced that they are to introduce legislation banning the sale of secondhand underwear largely on the grounds that it is unhygienic. I am not a wearer of "pre-loved" underwear but guess that there might well be a market in some developing nations - clearly the Ghanaian market sellers agree because they think the whole thing is pants. Would you buy used underwear? Is this a silly law?

No, I wouldn't buy used underwear....well...I wouldn't buy used clothing at all. I've been to Ghana twice in the last 10 years...and I have to say....I've always wondered how people could buy used underwear! There are markets for it...and sometimes it's on sale out on the road! Lots of development is happening in Ghana and I guess it's also a drive by the government to set a standard.

Hmmm...yes...if people want to buy it, they should be allowed to (I guess). It's not like they are being FORCED to buy it, right?
@p1kef1sh (45681)

Only forced in the sense that they don't have the money to buy new ones.

Me neither. I agree about your thoughts on the Government. But I do think that if people want to buy (or need to even) secondhand clothes then they should be allowed to.

I would not buy them , but I do think it's a silly law. How about a law requiring them to be laundered if they feel they need a law?

mmm i don't mind second hand stuff but underwear is opne of the things you just don't share it's just ewww! I know they've been washed but really it's just not done I'd rather keep the same pants that are mine on for the next 100 days and wash them every day that have to wear someone elses. Maybe thats just me dunno but it's just wrong even my friends who i know and love it's just a no i'd rather go commando lol plus mine need to match or i feel wrong so it'd never work for me. I can't believe they felt the need to pass a law isn't there bigger and better things to be worrying about surely this wasn't like top 5 of their priority list?!? You could ship all your pink and yellow panties over for them hun youd make a fortune!

Would I buy used undergarments? Depends on who's they were, and if they were still in them. Some would probably go for a pretty penny on some auction sites. Can't you see competitive bidding on 'pre-loved' garments that were owned by Marilyn Monroe, or Elvis? (not if they were still in them, of course )

Hmm, pre loved underwear! I will give them a miss thanks! The thought of someone loving their underwear and then passing the undies on to someone else is a bit nauseating really I feel! I have seen second hand undies in bags of rags that we used to get at work from the local charity shop. I wonder if people donate their underwear along with their clothing expecting them to be re-used, or are they just too lazy to think of anything else to do with them? When they were found in the bags of rags, the underwear, stains and all would be deposited over the head of the nearest apprentice to cheers of laughter from all those tradesmen around!

I can imagine the feelings of the apprentices! I got sent for a long stand when I was one! Nope, pre-loved knickers are not for me either.

HaHa! I never got sent on any missions like that, but I saw young kids get sent for long weights (waits), left handed screwdrivers and elbow grease. I did get asked to get the water level in the radiator of a VW Beetle once but I knew that they were air cooled and told them where to go!

I would not dream of wearing used underwear, nor would I dream of selling or donating my used underwear to someone else. When I am done using it, there is a reason why I am done using it, and I see no reason to give it to someone else, since it is really a disgusting idea, in my view.

Certainly not knickers but more than likely a bra if it was in good condition and the price is right. I gave a friend a heap of my bras that became too small for me. They were very pretty and in excellent condition. I think she was happy to have them. I know for sure she wore the sports bra a lot.

hi pikey ugh and yucksville. no I would not be in the market for secondhand undies as like the government says it is unhygienic Some people do not thoroughly wash their underwear and thus it would be gross to handle them let alone put them next to next to one's body.No not used undies as it really is unclean. Places like Ghana with primitive methods of washing would probably led to germy underwear.Me I like to buy mine fresh and newly manufactured. I just do not cotton to the idea of used undies.
@p1kef1sh (45681)

I don't cotton on to that idea either Hatley.

i wont on panties unless they are literally brand new with tags but been donated to a thrift store but i have bought bras at a thrift store before.. im impossible to fit and i cant afford expensive ones and one place i used to shop at apparently have rich people donating that were my size so some would have tags and some would just look like they had never been worn and i would try them on but after buying i would def wash them in scalding hot water lol

PIkey- I actually had to look up the story because I wasn't sure if this was 'jest' or serious. I have to say that though it seems common sense would apply to the purchase of second hand "intimate" items I suppose the law is for the safety of all involved.I noticed in the very short commentary on it that they are also banning the import of second hand mattresses and handkerchiefs. I know here in the US most secondhand stores are no longer taking mattresses. I know I wouldn't buy a second mattress because it would be worn out, not to mention the bed bugs it might contain. In terms of the "intimates" I'd never buy any of those things second hand. It's just not sanitary. You have no idea if the person before you had something you might not want to catch. Not to mention it would just be nasty to wear something that a woman had used previously during her time of the month. Namaste-Anora

I'd not buy either although I think that the idea of legislating against it is ridiculous and smacks of State involvement in things that are too trivial. I keep imagining skid marks! LOL.

Of course not, why should I buy used underwear even if its washed with bleach,immersed in hot water or boiled.And why should used underwear be for sale anyway.Maybe used clothes that will be fine but underwear, nope....

I think that if you are that hard up that you need to buy preworn underwear that you have some bigger problems than what you're letting on about. I mean seriously I think that is horrible. I know that when I was younger and if I were to spend the night at a friends house and if I forgot to bring an extra pair of underwear I would have rather worn no underwear than to even think about borrowing a pair from one of my friends let alone spend actual money on a pair that belonged to a complete stranger at one point. Buying used underwear is just flat out yucky!

I think that the people that wear these things have nothing and so they have little choice. Not for me though either.

Hi Pikef1sh, I personally wouldn't buy secondhand underwear and as many have said there is the health and hygiene factor too but to have it as illegal to do so a bit much as surely it is up to an individuals choice as to wear it or not. Thinking about it, whose bra was that??? lol, not pants though so let you off he he. Huggles. Ellie :D

The bra was a brand new Tesco's sports bra size 36FF if I recall correctly. I bought it myself Ellie. You can't say that I', not in touch with my feminine side! LOL.

I can't think of any logical reason not to buy used underwear--a good washing with some bleach will kill anything. But I have never bought any and won't unless my circumstances are so drastic that I can't afford anything else. I think I might go without rather than buy used. Anything else, I don't care if it's used or not. In fact, most of my furnishings and clothing are second hand. But all my undies were bought new. I haven't bought any for about 10 years, I'm about due for some new ones but I looked at prices the other day and about went into shock!
@p1kef1sh (45681)

I have a lovely secondhand 3 piece that would have cost 10 times what we paid for it if it were new. As it is it was 2 years old and barely used. I only wear new undies and wouldn't countenance secondhand simply because I don't like the idea of it. 10 years is very good going!

Whether I would buy second hand underwear or not would depend on your definition of underwear. Camisoles, bustiers and the like perhaps, but knickers I would draw the line at. However, if I wanted to buy second hand knickers I would be most vexed if someone told me I wasn´t allowed to. I´m wondering if this legislation will give rise to a black market in used undies. I have a wonderful mental picture of some dodgy looking individual in a trench coat ...

Hi ya P1key Hmm, well I most certainly wouldn't buy second-hand undies but I guess that is because I really don't need to. If I was so short of cash and I had no option then I suppose I would have to. I mean I would of course give them a good wash in bleach first haha. These plastic bags that come through my letter box sometimes ask for underwear umongst their list of wanted items. I see them in the charity shops in baskets too. I think it is silly to make an actual law of it because I think it should be up to the choice of the individual. What say you p1kef1sh?
@p1kef1sh (45681)

I agree about the law. I think that there must be better things to legislate about.

Personally, I wouldn't buy used underwear for two reasons: it's not hygienic, and underwear is very private/intimate. I understand though that some people might not be able to afford brand-new ones, hence they resort to getting some from the second-hand shop. Some think it's okay to wear used panties for as long one boils and disinfects them. I don't know if that works. Still, I wouldn't do it. As for the Ghanian law, I wouldn't want to say it's silly. If used underwear spreads diseases, then I guess it's just right for the government to ban them. Maybe it's just genuinely trying to protect its citizens. Cheers!
