What will happen to life on the earth if it ceases to revolve round the sun and becomes stationary ?

Most living things on earth will die, but it might not be that case as well. Some living things has got strong adaptability and so they might just survive. With that, the ecosystem will change and over the time, a new world emerge. While humans will evolve as well, with part of the population always in the dark and the other half always under the sun. It's just like the case now, some parts of the world has got snow, but some not.

Hi Doctor, Actually, there are three movements involved here. 1. Orbit, the annual journey of the Earth around the sun; 2. Rotation of the Earth, completed every 24 hours; and 3. Galactic spin completed every million years or so (the Earth do not pass the same way every year but follows a corkscrew path in space as the Sun is also involved in this galactic spin). You are referring to one movement of the Earth: orbit. Actually, orbit is a play between the outward and an attractive force between the Earth and the Sun. The Earth, in a sense, is in a continuous free fall towards the center of gravitational force that holds it. If the lateral force stops or diminishes, the Earth would eventually fall toward the center of the Sun.

Well apart from the scientific responses that have been given already, I would like to add that if the earth stops rotating then frankly it would be one really boring life.Regions facing the sun would be having day all along and the other region darkness and night. In such a scenario people wold either crave for the nightlife they miss or for the sunshine to get renewed and fresh again.I would say it would be a terrible punishment to us to have us live that way.

Simply put we'd all die! The earth's movement creates the centrifugal force that keeps gravity in operation. Without it we'd all float away into outer space where we could not live without air and food!

The side of the earth that never sees the sun will become so cold that NOTHING will be able to live there. and the change of seasons will cease to occur. Human and animals will die if they can't afford/don't have the means to leave the frozen half of the planet. This is a very depressing scenario!! =C

Hi Di, I would recommend you watch the movie - "The Core". It however doesnt show any thing about what would happen if the Earth Stops revolving around the sun but it shows what we can expect if the earth stops rotating on its axis. I think something similar would happen. Also there would be two halves on this planet - one in complete darkness and quite cold and the other would burn out due to getting constant exposure to sunlight. Hope that helps Cheers, theSids.

I do not believe we will be glory, as it would be so gloomy and well we would have to adapt somehow.
