Gift Ideas Needed

Here's the deal. My family (mother, siblings, nieces and nephews and their partners) get together on Boxing Day for a generic gift exchange. What I mean by that is everyone brings a gift in the $30 range. No tags. All gifts are piled together and names are drawn. The first name drawn picks a gift and opens it. The next person picks a gift and opens it. They can decide to keep that gift or "steal" from the first person by switching gifts. The further down the line your name is called, the more open gifts you have to choose from to "steal". This will be our 3rd year. Last year my sister decided that my children should be included (they are 14 and 17 now). I balked at the idea since a good number of gifts the first year were alcohol related. My sister said there were only three, I counted five. Obviously the gifts need to be generic in gender and age (now that my kids are included). Last year I bought gifts that our family might like giving my daughter a chance to pick one of ours if there was nothing more appropriate (ie Night at the Museum DVD). Only one daughter attended as the other was working. This year both my daughters will be there and possibly my eldest daughter's boyfriend. My daughter has asked that I purchase his contribution and she would pay me back. I have 2 gifts so far - preprepared gift baskets - 2 large ceramic mugs each with a packet of hot chocolate and 4 chocolate bars; the other is a lantern with a bag of chocolate covered almonds. It is under $30 so I will also purchase a candle to go in it. So, I still have 3 more gifts to purchase. I don't want them all to be gift baskets but they do need to be desirable by men and women, young and old. All my nieces and nephews are over 20, most with partners. And then there are my two teenage daughters. So you see my dilemma. So, does anyone have any ideas?

I forgot to mention that gift cards are against the rules since everyone could resort to that and where would be the fun in that. You would think a Snuggie would be a good idea but someone got something like that last year. HE is 6'4" and couldn't get it stolen from him. LOL!

Big boxes of chocolates... Or maybe $30 gift certificates to Canadian Tire or iTunes or some other store...

I forgot to mention, gift cards are a no-no. That would be crazy if everyone resorted to simply buying gift cards. I did find a cool book today worth $29.95 on sale for $12 called "Top Ten Everything 2011". That's 3 now.

My family does the same thing only its just for the grown ups. The younger ones still get a gift. The grandparent brings gifts for their little ones..well I do the same..baskets. This year my basket has a rice bag...chapstick...lotion..hand sanitizer from bath and body (they were a buck a piece)..and a bag of Ghirardelli chocolates. Others bring dvds or things like that. I like giving a useful gift.

My nieces and nephews have children. We all buy for them. The first year everyone bought for my kids but last year they insisted on including them. I try to buy something I like. I have brought my kids with me and pointed to gift baskets and said, "If you had a choice, which one would YOU want?" Having to buy 5 gifts, though, I don't want to do all gift baskets.

Hey pat! Sounds like alot of fun, but kind of touch to come up with that many gifts! I like the ideas so far, but I honestly don't know what other stuff you can get. How about some game stuff, candles, crafts. I saw some really cool stuff in the Bed, Bath & Beyond Catalog. Don't know if you have any of those stores, but they had a great gift that I want to get. It was a bunch of different games all in one for about $20 or $30. It had checkers, chess, backgammon, and a whole bunch of others. Maybe some hand held games would be good. They usually sell for around $30.

I never thought about handheld games. I'll have to look into that. Thanks, Opal.

At our Christmas', this is called Yankee Swap. it is a lot of fun. My sister-in-law thinks that we should still buy for the kids....the YankeeSswap gifts include kids gifts as well.....I do not like drawing names for the kids, as I do not know what to get them. This family drives me crazy and I will go there with an attitude before I walk in the door anyway. Wish me luck with my husband's psycho family.
