What do you think the option of generic drugs?

I got a letter from my insurance company, and they giving advice of considering use generic drugs to reduce the prescription cost. But first thing first, I should always consult with the doctor before making such decision. Because I can't say whether certain generic drug is good for me or not, right? I knew that those generic drugs are not patented like those brand name; but they use the same ingredients, and have the same effect as those brand name? What was your experience with generic drugs? Health insurance is getting more expensive, as other medication cost too.
