I have mild insomnia and usually it recurs when i get over excited, nervous or i think too much of a certain situation or person and this could render me unable to sleep for a longer hours. Maybe, it sounds funny but I do have try other suggestions but it does not work for me. The inner body and mind could tell you if you likely suffer from lot of stress. The determining clear picture is the inability to sleep. So the signs maybe due to mental and body fatigue. You just need to find a good outlet to learn some effective way to have a good sleep. Like listening to good music or tiring your eyes till you get drowsy such as watching boring movies or talking to a boring person. In some cases when the extreme insomnia affected your daily living it comes not just an ordinary but you need to consult a physician about your insomnia.

Yes, I am a certified insomniac. But the weird thing about me is, whenever I drink any stimulant like coffee, tea, or chocolate, I tend to get to sleep more than if I try not to take them. I just dont know the reason behind that. I am probably the weirdest insomniac ever. Sleeping pills on the other hand works for me too. I take sleepasil. Though it makes me feel high most of the time. :)

Hello, mylotters. Yes jornz87, I'm sure your ideas work for many insomniacs, but there are some of us, myself included, who just cannot sleep even though we use your ideas. Just to add another idea - one which I use, when I'm not feeling too lazy - and that is: I do some exercises. Maybe I jog on the spot, or even dance to music. It isn't long before I start losing my energy...this helps promote relaxation. Don't throw yourself into a chair straight after you've done this, throw yourself into bed. See if it works for you and the other mylotters who have responded to this discussion.

I used to have a few times of insomnia long time ago. It is very annoying if I cannot fall asleep. I still remember that there was one time I got up to surf on the Internet from one till after five in the morning. Then I went to sleep. It is a painful experience to me because nothing would help. But anyway thank you for the tips. Have a good day, joenz.

one thing that really helped me when i had insomnia was when i quit drinking caffeine altogether. i didn't drink anything containing caffeine or at least tried to avoid such drinks for over a year. my sleeping started to go back to normal afterwards when i had been only getting around 2 hours a sleep each night. the thing that started my insomnia to begin with was a strong stimulant i took that i don't feel comfortable typing. anyway i wondered if i would ever get back to a normal sleeping pattern as i couldn't even hold on to a job because of it. this has been years ago and i am now drinking caffeine beverages again but the insomnia fortunately never came back.

I do suffer from insomnia. If I throw away my sleeping pills, I would never sleep. If I avoid drinking coffee, then I get a head ache and thus, can't sleep. Reading is one of my greatest loves, so books are my enemy. I get too engrossed in them to put them down till I get to the end. There is no one to massage me. If I turn off the lights, it doesn't make any difference, my eyes still stare at the ceiling, just in the dark. In all seriousness, some of those are good tips. I use sleeping pills, but only when I have been awake for several days in a row. My problem is a thyroid condition. I started out with an overactive thyroid and after about 12 years of it, my body just got used to surviving on just two or three hours of sleep. Now that the thyroid has been treated with radioactive iodine, and is under active, I still don't sleep because I spent so long going without it and cant seem to retrain the system. I often have trouble shutting my brain off at night. There is work, and stuff at home or with the kids that always seem to spring into my thoughts when I lay down at night. I can't shut it off.

from my experience ive found that playing a particular pc or console game for more than 6 to 7 hours in a day and especially before sleep leads to high insomnia...
