The free shipping could lead a store to bankruptcy

There are some online stores that provide the option to choose free shipping when buying our products. Some others give this option in some of their products. The issue is, how could this stores be successful if they send anything to any country of the world. I recently bought at dealextreme.com and i received my product one month after the purchase. I wonder how is it possible that this stores with free shipping can keep active without bankruptcy... any idea?
